Synthetic decking options – Archadeck of Central SC provides the ultimate guide to material choices used in creating your dream deck

This composite deck in Lexington is a true gem!

This composite deck in Lexington,SC, is a true gem!

In the final installment of our two-part series on decking material considerations, Archadeck of Central SC discusses the often confusing realm of low-maintenance decking choices on the market today. Low-maintenance decking is what is commonly referred to in the business as “synthetic decking”. Synthetic decking includes composites, capstock and solid PVC. These materials represent the fastest-growing segment of decking materials sold today. When you begin to examine the abundant choices available when choosing the material for your new deck, it can get confusing keeping up with each “type” of synthetic offers what — Synthetic decks have evolved over the past several years to encompass beauty in a wonderful array of hues, undulation and wood graining that rival the look of natural wood minus the maintenance!

Archadeck of Central SC would like to elaborate on the characteristics of each type of synthetic so that you may make a well-informed decision in choosing the best material for your new deck or redecking needs…

  • Composites – Composite is a general term for the original form of low-maintenance decking. Some builders also use the technical term when referring to composites- which is wood plastic composites, or WPC. Composites are a mix of materials including wood fiber and plastic.  Product lines such as the TimberTech Twin Finish or Reliaboard are good examples of traditional wood/plastic composites. Traditional composite has now become the value-oriented decking board among synthetics because of the new products that have joined the category. Wood particles are still part of the makeup of the product, which makes it porous. Because this product is porous, it does have limited capacity to grow mold. If you spill coffee, wine, or grease (or even sunscreen) on the deck you will want to clean it up quickly just as you would inside your home. Other environmental factors such as bird droppings can lead to staining if not removed and cleaned properly. Even though WPC’s don’t require staining or painting, they do need to be kept clean in order to keep them looking and functioning their best.

  • Solid PVC decking – Pure PVC decking products have become more desirable over the past few years. Lines such as AZEK and TimberTech’s XLM are great examples of pure PVC decking materials. They consist of PVC foam and a hard PVC cap that is non-porous. They are non-porous and, based on this solidity. These will not stain permanently, however when they become soiled, they will need to be cleaned with soap and water. Keep in mind that just because a material is low-maintenance doesn’t mean it’s self-cleaning. PVC comes in a host of colors and new color introductions are made onto the market almost every year, so the selection is vast. You can get solid colors such as the TimberTech Natural Collection, or the TimberTech Tropical collection , which has more streaking to replicate the look of real tropical hardwoods. These PVC products are oil-based so the natural colors are the least expensive, and the tropical collection forges into the higher end of the synthetic cost spectrum. Cost for synthetics can vary depending on the color, pattern and amount of streaking and undulation present. In general, the formulation of synthetic can be pricey, especially the products that contain emulated natural wood details.

This Composite deck in Lexington offers plenty of room for dining and entertaining.

  • Capstock –  Capstock is the newest of the three synthetic decking materials to come onto the scene. It is a third generation synthetic which is also referred to as capped PVC. This product contains a composite core which has been capped, or wrapped in PVC. The material’s makeup delivers a product that is impervious to the elements and everyday accidents endured by most decks. TimberTech Evolutions and Fiberon are both good examples of capstock decking. The benefit of capstock is the performance and the price point. Capstock is less expensive than pure PVC and performs quite well.

From a price perspective, wood plastic composites are the least expensive, capped composite will generally be less expensive than a pure PVC product. Synthetics can range in price from $2.50 linear ft.  for WPC to $6.50 linear ft. for a solid PVC material. Though synthetics may appear to be the same, know that no two are created equal. There is a wide range of quality, colors and textures within each category  and often the deciding factor for a customer is their personal preference of the look and feel of a particular product.

Comparatively, synthetics are not as structurally sound as wood. In order to properly support composite decking, the joists will usually need to be closer together than when building with PT lumber to prevent sagging. For example, on diagonal decking comprised of composite, this may require 12″ spacing vs. 16″ for PT. The advantages of both solid PVC and wrapped PVC products include reducing the amount of maintenance required by the homeowner, and more specifically a decrease in the amount of cleaning required to keep the deck looking new. Wood Plastic Composites are still a good product but require more effort on the part of the homeowner. It is important to know that “low-maintenance” does not mean “no-maintenance” and as with any structure, a synthetic deck will need to be kept clean in order to remain looking and functioning at its best.

No matter which synthetic is right for your needs or your budget, Archadeck of Central SC can answer any questions you have about all of the decking products we offer. Archadeck of Central SC explores the realm of synthetic decking and why it is important to hire a professional when considering a new low-maintenance deck or re-deck for your backyard

Composite deck with composite rail and flared stairs.

As you thumb through the pages of your favorite home and garden magazine, you may notice the large number of synthetic decks taking center stage. Synthetic decks have evolved over the past several years to encompass beauty in a wonderful array of hues, undulation and wood graining that rival the look of natural wood. Natural wood has met its match when compared to today’s composite decking. No other decking material requires as little maintenance asnsynthetic, nor can natural wood promise the longevity synthetic provides.

There are different genres of synthetic decking materials to choose from in today’s market. Each comes with its own low-maintenance benefits. Sometimes it is difficult to make a distinction from one type of synthetic to another. Archadeck of Central SC has prepared a breakdown of the three classifications of synthetic decking material  making it easier for homeowners to make an informed choice as to which synthetic will best suit their lifestyle and their budget.

  • Composites – Low-maintenance composites and other man-made materials are a bit more costly than wood upfront, but once you factor in annual deck-care costs, composites will save you money in the long run. Composites are the most well-known of all synthetic products because they have been around the longest. Composites are now made to emulate the look of real wood, with wood graining and streaking that in a quality composite can rival the real thing. High quality composites will also deter the growth of mold and mildew by the addition of mold inhibitors present in the makeup of the composite, adding to the material’s ultimate charm. Archadeck of Central SC has had great success with TimberTech, one of the leaders in composite decking.

  • Solid PVC Decking– Cellular PVC decking is a high- performance product made of solid cellular plastic. PVC decking, such as those in the AZEK line, come with both fade and stain warranty protection. PVC decking only requires minimal maintenance. It will not fade, warp, crack, splinter or stain. PVC is also moisture friendly and is used heavily around pools, spas and marinas.

    Waterside Deck

    Waterside Deck

  • Capstock – Capstock decking is referred to as the hybrid of decking materials because it contains a composite core  wrapped on 3 sides or in some cases all 4 sides in solid PVC. Many capstock brands, such as Fiberon, come with extensive stain and fade warranties. Like all synthetics, it requires no painting, staining or sealing. General soap and water cleanup is all that is asked of you.  The key to choosing the right capstock lies within the setting you wish to use it in. We recommend choosing a capstock product that is covered on all sides when used in humid and moist environments to avoid the risk of potential damage such as expansion and warping over time.

Quality man-made synthetics were once only available to builders and contractors,  but now composites are readily available to homeowners at home improvement stores and building material outlets. Even though these materials are easily accessible to homeowners and do-it-yourselfers doesn’t mean that choosing to become a weekend warrior and install your own synthetic deck is the wisest decision. Unlike natural wood, synthetic’s makeup entails a product that is denser than natural wood. This density is part of what gives synthetics their low-maintenance qualities that make them so desirable. To avoid compromising the characteristics of the material it is important that it be installed properly. In order to get the most out of your low-maintenance deck we recommend having it installed by a licensed professional to ensure you get all the benefits out of your investment. Many synthetics need to be installed with pre-drilled holes to keep the integrity of the material intact. Some synthetics also require the use of a hidden fastener system to deliver that seamless look that synthetic decks are famous for. Archadeck of Central SC warns buyers to also beware of inferior grade synthetics sold at home improvement stores, because the price you pay for a synthetic in one of these retail outlets doesn’t always mean you get what you pay for. We get our materials directly from the manufacturer, which ensures all quality control standards are met with every synthetic board that comes through our doors.

For this Forest Acres homeowner change is good as evidenced by a new and unique deck design by Archadeck of Central SC

Columbia SC Forest Acres deck builders

Part of being an outdoor structure specialist also involves being able to envision the potential of a particular outdoor living space. Having the ability to transform a homeowner’s outdoor space to make it more functional based on the homeowner’s needs and the characteristics of the exiting home and lot makes the final outcome more rewarding for us as outdoor structure builders. Knowing that we were able to improve their outdoor living experience makes it all worthwhile. We recently completed a project in the Forest Acres community of Columbia, SC, that serves as a good example of overcoming challenges with creativity.  The homeowners had an existing outdoor living space which they could barely use because of the proximity of the space to that of the next door neighbor. With a little design ingenuity and creative thinking we were able to transform this backyard into an area they now cherish.

Columbia deck builders

This unique deck design delivers access into the homeowner’s beautifully landscaped yard which wasn’t easily accessible prior to the addition.

When we initially met with these Forest Acres homeowners we learned that their lot falls from front to back on a downward angle and they also own a full lot next door to their existing home which was inaccessible with no doorway out to it. The homeowners had to go out the front door of their home and go around in order to access this portion of their yard. To change the traffic flow of their existing space, and make all areas of their yard easily accessible, they decided they really wanted to add a new deck approximately 10 x 20 with stairs that would allow them easy entry into their beautifully landscaped side yard. They also wanted to change out the master bedroom window to a door to gain access to the deck. The design Archadeck of Central SC  came up with provides the homeowner with all of this and more.

Notice how the deck wraps around this home in Forest Acres. The design fits like a glove to the home and the yard.

We took the new deck design a step further by wrapping the deck around to the rear of the home in order to connect to the homeowner’s existing screened porch, giving dual access to the deck. Up until this point, the homeowners expressed they rarely used their screened porch due to access and privacy reasons. Part of the role Archadeck of Central SC played in transforming their outdoor space was to remedy their traffic flow to and from the porch in order to utilize the space as intended. In addition to the new deck we also designed a  4′ walkway that extends down the backside of the perimeter parallel with the brick facade of the home to add character and more viable outdoor living space.

Louver detail on deck in Forest Acres Columbia SC

Lattice detail privacy wall on deck in Forest Acres.

We began the transformation by taking out the door to the garage and building a unique catwalk style side deck to take its place.   The new design features a custom-made deck privacy wall to alleviate the view into the neighbor’s backyard space. The privacy wall was built using an intricate combination of lattice and a fiberglass screening barrier, which gives this portion of the deck a Zen-inspired appeal. This new design also provides access to the valuable dry storage space beneath the porch. The homeowner plans to relocate his workshop from the garage to this dynamic storage space in the coming months.

Dry storage space under deck

Convenient and spacious dry storage area under the deck.

The new deck was built with pressure treated pine along with wood railing and a TimberTech rail cap. In lieu of traditional lattice skirting across the bottom of the deck, Archadeck of Central SC came up with a distinct design of louvers that gives more privacy to the storage space under the deck. For added convenience we incorporated deck rail cap lighting and riser lights into the design. We also added lighting to the storage area underneath the porch so it is easily accessible in the evening.

The back part of the deck features a cantilevered section that serves as valuable outdoor living space, making it perfect for the location of the grill.

The homeowner’s are elated with their new space; this testimonial speaks volumes about how this project has impacted their outdoor living enjoyment and their busy outdoor lifestyle. We were able to change the flow and feel of their existing space through a new deck addition and a creative traffic flow change, turning the new outdoor space into their favorite spot in the house! We also want to thank the homeowners for the use of their pictures from this project.

“The owners of Archadeck of Central South Carolina are a pleasure to work with.   They sat down with us and helped design a custom deck.   They made good suggestions about both materials and construction so it would meet our needs and look great!   For example, to enable access to the storage areas under the deck and to allow a cantilevered section at the back, steel flitch plates were used for strength and to span distances. The craftsmen employed were highly skilled and dependable and the owners of Archadeck provided consistent and helpful supervision. Many of our neighbors walking by tell us how good the deck looks and we are enjoying it immensely.”

Archadeck of Central SC is making it easier for more Columbia area residents to live their backyard dreams with our staged building program

Elegant deck, pergola and patio by Archadeck

Is an elegant deck, pergola and patio outdoor living combination your ideal of a dream backyard? If so, we can make it a reality.

Just because the 2013 Archadeck Dream Backyard Makeover contest has drawn to a close does not mean you still can’t have the backyard of your dreams! The grand prize winners of the contest were announced on May 17th, and they are to receive a custom outdoor space that incorporates a TimberTech synthetic outdoor space with Belgard hardscapes.  This outdoor living combination is just one example of the many possible outdoor living choices you can dream up as your perfect backyard retreat. If you have been yearning for an outdoor oasis all your own, but taking on an outdoor living space combination is just too much to take on in one endeavor, Archadeck of Central SC can build the outdoor living space you have been wishing for one step at a time. Our Staged (or phased) building program enables you to plan and construct your dream backyard over time.

Our phased building program allows homeowners the freedom to build your ideal backyard in stages making it easier on your budget, and with less of an impact on your lifestyle. Phased building consists of engineering, designing and building your outdoor space in phases so that future additions or amendments can be added easily. This is made possible by building with your future circumstances and the structural integrity of your project in mind.

Elevated screened porch with deck and stairs - Columbia, SC

This backyard dream come true is located in Columbia and consists of an elevated screened porch and deck combination.

We assist you in putting together a master plan to set your backyard dreams into motion.  Archadeck of Central S.C. can assist in planning your ultimate outdoor space ensuring all the structural footwork is in place to facilitate future additions. We can begin with a dominant starting point and can also work  in unison with your pool company, lighting company and your landscaper on the structural components needed to proceed with your grand backyard design.

Our primary goal during our initial consultation is to understand your needs, desires, budget and priorities to come up with a plan custom made for you. For example, if your vision of the ideal backyard consists of a low-maintenance deck and backyard pool with a hardscape patio surround, we would suggest starting the first portion of your master plan closest to the house with the deck. It is always a good idea to begin your master plan working outward from your home. The primary reason for starting closest to your home is to ensure less lifestyle interruption. It also ensures that all primary structures are tied into your home structurally as you build out from the initial phase. There is less room to overcome obstacles that may arise when you begin a job working from the outside back to your home.

Try this composite deck and luscious spa deck on for size in your backyard.

The second portion of this backyard vision would entail working in unison with your pool installer to ensure every detail is accounted for and to facilitate each phase of your project. We also work with your electrician and plumber to get all your lines placed in advance to avoid retrofitting in the future. Laying the foundations for the additional phases of your master plan is an important part of your project. During this portion of construction we would concentrate on adding your backyard pool and the paver patio surround. Since the conduit and lines for the pool are already run under the deck and patio areas, installing the pool will not disturb these completed areas. Voila – your backyard dream has become a reality and, since it was completed in phases, the project was easy on the wallet and was not a major interruption to your lifestyle. Another benefit of staged building is that during each stage as we work toward fulfilling your dream of the perfect outdoor space, many homeowners comment they feel they get a new backyard over and over again.

If you are interested in learning more about our staged building program, and how Archadeck of Central SC can help make your backyard dreams come true don’t hesitate to contact us today.
