Want a cozy place to enjoy autumn? An outdoor room is the answer.

Autumn in the CarolinasAs cooler weather arrives it can sometimes hamper the time you spend outdoors. Wet weather, wind and allergens caused by fall foliage can drive you from the backyard you love into the house. However, this certainly doesn’t have to be the case. Archadeck of Central SC offers a wide variety of custom outdoor rooms that provide minimum to maximum protection from Mother Nature while still allowing you to enjoy all the elements you love about the outdoors.

Open porch in ColumbiaGood

Covered (open) porches provide viable protection from negative aspects of the outdoors. These include protection from wet weather, UV rays and, depending on the design, some aspects of wind protection. A covered porch provides the most versatility when combined with another structure such as a deck or patio. This will expand the variety of outdoor functions you can enjoy.

Better

Screened porches and 3-season rooms provide additional benefits over a covered porch simply through the presence of screens. Screens acts as a barrier to reduce the amount of  insects, debris and allergens that enter the space. You will still get the shade benefits and protection from rain and sun as you would with a covered porch. In the Columbia area’s mild climate, it may be possible to enjoy a screened porch throughout the winter. Even on chilly days the use of a space heater, or adding an outdoor fireplace to your initial design, can help keep the screened room cozy  and warm.

Even Better

Three season rooms increase the benefits of a screened porch through the addition of a convertible panel system. This will allow you to use screens or clear panels as needed on any given day. You can extend the protection of a new or existing screened porch to that of a non-conditioned sunroom-like space. We offer aluminum and vinyl outdoor rooms with a convertible-panel porch-enclosure system. This panel systemet can be integrated into the initial design of a new screened porch or outdoor room addition or as an enhancement/upgrade to an existing structure.

Sunrooms promise the most protection of all outdoor rooms. Sunrooms are controlled environments as they are designed in the same manner as an indoor room with the inclusion of heating and cooling. There can be a foot of snow on the ground and you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the outdoors without needing a sweater! Sunroom additions also increase the heated square footage in your home — a wise investment dollar-for-dollar when considering the monetary benefits if you should ever decide to sell your home.

Now is the best time ever to move forward with your outdoor living structure plans, and here’s why:

Central SC Sunrooms give you a front row seat to Mother NatureOf all the questions homeowners ask when planning their outdoor living space, the most frequent is undoubtedly  “WHEN is the best time to build?” While there is no unanimously correct answer to this question,  many factors come into play in order to satisfy each individual project. These can be lifestyle related, budgetary or even include preparations for HOA approvals. However, the answer comes down to your readiness to pursue your outdoor living addition. If you are ready, then there is definitely no time like the present to get the ball rolling!

Here in the Columbia area, we are blessed with a mild climate virtually year-round. With no danger of having to deal with frost-lines, and very little snow or icy weather, it is possible to begin your project in the winter and have it completed by the time it is warm enough to enjoy open-air structures such as decks or patios. Choosing a cooler-season project can also add unexpected benefits and value to your anticipated  outdoor living project.

Here are just a few advantages of choosing a fall/winter project timeline:

  • Patio in the fallLess Wait Time = More Enjoyment Sooner –– A good incentive to begin your outdoor living structure addition in the cooler months is that you’ll encounter less wait time before construction can begin. Gaining approval through HOAs and permitting may take less time because there is less backlog now. Deciding to build now will now mean you’re able to enjoy the benefits of your new structure sooner and in plenty of time for the arrival of the outdoor living season in the warmer months ahead. Keep in mind, when dealing with a quality builder, wait times can be longer, especially during the warm seasons. Deciding on a fall/winter project can greatly reduce those wait times.
  • Double pergolas on West Columbia SC wooden deck by Archadeck of Central SCThe Science of Wood — If you are considering a structure built from wood, a cooler-month project timeline will provide many benefits. Wood requires a time period of acclimation and curing. The laws of expansion and contraction always apply when it comes to working with wood. All wood is hygroscopic, meaning that when exposed to air, it will release or pick up moisture until it is level with the humidity and temperature of the air. Humid conditions, such as those in summer, will cause more rapid expansion and contraction of wood that is not yet sealed for protection against the elements. A structure built from wood needs to cure for a period of time before the sealer or paint will properly adhere to the wood and promote beneficial protection qualities. By choosing to build during the fall and winter, the least humid times of year, your new wooden deck or other outdoor structure may require less time to cure in order to properly accept the sealer or paint you choose.
  • Covered porch in NE Columbia outdoor combination projectThe Dormant Landscape — Your lawn and landscape will experience less stress from construction if you choose to build during the cooler months of the year — this is because most turf grasses, trees and shrubs and other perennials are in their dormant period during the winter. When dormant, these grasses and plants are less likely to experience permanent damage from being  trimmed or pruned to accommodate the addition of a backyard structure. This includes foot traffic from the construction crew.
  • Less Stress –Aside from the landscape, construction during the winter will cause less of an interruption to your day-to-day lifestyle as most people use their yards less during these months. The kids are in school and less likely to be playing outside during this time. The noise and materials required to complete your project will be less of an annoyance than they would be when you are using the yard a lot during the warmer months.
  • Archadeck 2013 PhotographyActing NOW = More Value — It is no secret that costs of materials used in outdoor living space designs, either wood or composite, can increase when moving into a new year. Choosing to move ahead with your project now will save you money in the long run on materials costs, and in addition if you intend to finance your new outdoor structure, the interest rates are still extremely low. Even if our project timeline extends into the next calendar year, if you decide on your design and sign the contract prior to December 15th, 2015, you will lock into this year’s pricing. For many homeowners, the savings  are reason enough to move ahead with getting all the logistics in place now, instead of waiting until later.

With a pergola, your outdoor living space has an element of versatility and style

Archadeck deck, pergola and outdoor kitchenA pergola is an outdoor room with cross rafters and no walls that provides a light, airy and inviting space to relax, dine or just admire. If you’re looking to add something visually interesting to your backyard, a pergola is exactly what you need to provide a stunningly aesthetic centerpiece to your outdoor living environment. No matter the size or style, any outdoor living space will be dramatically enhanced by the added protection from the elements it provides as well as the striking complexity it will add to your existing structures.

As a leader in the industry, Archadeck of Central South Carolina are the experts Columbia homeowners turn to for custom- designed and built outdoor structures and combination outdoor living spaces. Too often in the preliminary design stage, pergolas are overlooked because most people are simply unaware of the many benefits they offer. For instance, a pergola is the ideal structural addition to increase the character of your deck, patio and landscape because it introduces a vertical element that is often lacking.

The many benefits of this wonderful element include:

  • The feeling of a defined space – Four columns and cross rafters with no walls and a deck or concrete floor create an open-air outdoor room that’s great for eating, entertaining or lounging around with a magazine, offering more privacy than a deck or patio. Add drapes, screens or other materials to the pergola and you’ll have even more privacy.
  • Blythewood SC pergola builderShade – Be it with simple beams across the top, providing a roof-like structure, or fabric or lattice that creates an even more defined top cover. While pergolas don’t provide total shade, those beams or latticework do provide some relief from the intensity of the sun. At night, you can still sit under the pergola and see the stars.
  • Block unsightly views – Pergolas are also useful for added privacy or for blocking unsightly views, like a neighbor’s hideous outbuilding or dead tree. Placing a pergola strategically will focus guests’ attention on elements of your property that contribute a sense of elegance to your backyard.
  • Large deck with with white vinyl pergolaYour own “green” initiative – Vines like clematis, ivy, wisteria or grapes all do well when planted around a pergola. Not only will climbing plants be an attractive addition to the structure, but they’ll also provide you with even more shade and privacy…not to mention the option of vertical gardening if space is at a premium in your yard.
  • Protection from the weather – The fact that the pergola is not completely closed off like a regular roof means it’ll still have that outdoorsy feel without succumbing to the elements. If the plants are dense enough, a pergola can even protect you from the rain!

Throughout Columbia and the surrounding area, Archadeck of Central South Carolina has helped many homeowners see the extensive versatility of a pergola in their back yard used either as a single element or in combination with another outdoor living structure such as a deck. We build them in all shapes and sizes utilizing many different materials, such as wood or vinyl and even aluminum. Yes, aluminum!

As you know aluminum is low-maintenance, won’t ever rust, tarnish, or degrade like other materials. Its wood-like texture is composed of a multi-coat baked-on finish that doesn’t need painting, it won’t warp, crack or split and it’s termite resistant. All of these features added together produce a product that has exceptional durability and endurance that is highly desirable for exterior projects…easily outperforming wood or vinyl.

Pergola End Cut Options

Beams and rafters help define the visual impact of your pergola. Our aluminum pergolas give you a choice of four custom end-cut options and a wide range of design possibilities.

We offer these aluminum pergolas in a variety of shapes, styles and colors. The shading style options allow anywhere from forty to sixty percent protection from the sun depending upon the spacing of the beams and is part of the design selection for the Open Style and the Combination Style pergola. The Open Style is the traditional open lattice, while the Solid Style is a fully covered pergola top which is impervious to rain. For the ultimate in all options, the Combination Style allows you to intermingle open and solid patio covers. For shapes and colors, our end cut options for the beams and rafters include: scallop, bevel, miter and corbel shapes with a color selection of designer hues to match and coordinate with any existing structures.
