When it comes to sunrooms — you don’t know what you’ve been missing until you have it

Central SC Sunrooms give you a front row seat to Mother NatureThey say you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone but when it comes to owning an Archadeck of Central South Carolina sunroom,  you don’t know what you’ve been missing until you have it!

In the 13+ years we have served the Columbia SC area in designing and building custom outdoor living spaces, I have heard clients comment time and again about how their new sunroom has turned into the most loved, and used, room in their home — and with good reason. Sunrooms offer a kind of versatility and freedom you just can’t get with a traditional interior or outdoor room addition. Light and airy, the term sunroom alone whisks the imagination to a place where only positive energy resides. The sun is viewed as a source of health, energy and healing among many cultures. Our ancestors understood the relation between the sun and good health. From the Aztecs to the ancient Egyptians, many past societies revered the act of sun gazing as a sacred practice. This ritual is not too far beyond the way we now enjoy watching the rising and setting of the sun.

This spacious sunroom in Columbia, SC, delivers versatility within the home

Having a room where natural light is abundant can greatly enhance your mood and the entire feel of your home.  A sunroom is a great option for Columbia-area homeowners who are looking for an addition that will increase their quality of life and overall satisfaction with their home. A sunroom supports leisurely living and increases square footage — often with lower construction costs than adding on a fully finished room.

Did we mention how versatile a sunroom can be? There are many ways to enjoy a sunny retreat right at home. These features will make your sunroom comfortable, inviting and entertaining:

Archadeck sunroomA sunroom can serve as a multi-purpose room — A TV room, a playroom, a place for Mom’s getaway or Dad’s nap… a sunroom can be different things to each family member.

Indoor garden room — A transitional space between the indoors and outdoors begs for thriving potted plants as the connecting element.

A sunroom can serve as the ultimate home office — If you have a table in your sunroom, you can use the space as a home office. A supportive chair, a Wi-Fi connection and a view to your back yard will make for a productive morning.

A sunroom can serve as a dining room for special occasions and holidays — if you have a large group dinner on the calendar or a special event, a sunroom provides the perfect place to set up your celebratory meal. Ample table space, lighting and air circulation, plus proximity to the kitchen, is sure to make for an unforgettable event.

Christmas sunroom by Archadeck of ChicagolandA sunroom as a craft room or less formal living room — You can use this room as an opportunity to be playful with creative and salvaged pieces you don’t deem appropriate to display in your formal spaces.

Finally, a place to display a towering Christmas tree — If you have always wanted to choose the tallest tree on the lot during the holidays, many sunroom designs can easily accommodate larger holiday trees! Sunrooms often feature cathedral or vaulted ceilings that extend beyond the traditional 8′-10′ ceiling height.

At Archadeck of Central South Carolina, our ultimate goal is to create a sunroom that blends seamlessly into the existing architecture of your home by helping you choose materials that match or complement your home perfectly while providing the freedom and versatility to make your new room anything you want it to be!

Our Recent Sunroom Addition in Lexington, SC, is Oh So Satisfying

Lake Murray Sunroom Addition, Lexington SCOur most recent sunroom addition is located on the Lexington side of beautiful Lake Murray. Though the sunroom is on a smaller scale than many of our outdoor room projects, it satisfies and serves the function these homeowners had in mind.

As you can see from the “before” image, the back yard originally consisted of a wooden deck with stair access to the side yard and into the patio on the opposite side. When we met for the design consultation, the homeowners were looking for a way to enjoy the scenic views of the lake from their back yard, but in a conditioned space to keep them cool and dry.

Before

The heavy, dense design of the railing on their existing deck made it difficult to enjoy the views from within their home. It was only natural that a sunroom offering as much glass as possible, along with a way to heat and cool the space, was the perfect answer. Here at Archadeck, we realize that small spaces have every opportunity to add as much enjoyment and benefit as large spaces do, and this serene sunroom addition is proof!

Sunroom on Lake Murray

After

Archadeck of Central South Carolina designed and built this light and airy sunroom to speak to the homeowners’ needs. It features wide glass windows and a glass knee wall, which is somewhat unusual and perfect for this space!  We also added dual wooden stairs, mimicking the footprint of the original deck, which lead to the side yard and into the homeowners’ patio, just as before.

Investing in a custom sunroom is a wise decision for many reasons. Even if the sunroom does not encompass a large area, the added square footage potentially increases the value of your home. Sunroom additions also increase the heated and cooled interior space that you can enjoy year-round.

This NE Columbia Sunroom Exudes “Original to Home” Appeal

NE Columbia Sunroom with Complicated Roof tie in

NE Columbia, SC, sunroom addition by Archadeck of Central SC.

Hiring contractors can be a frustrating experience and vice-versa, sometimes being a contractor can be just as frustrating – for the same reasons. The bad contractors often ruin it for everyone. Bad contractors leave a bad taste and often shoddy work in their trail making homeowners leery of engaging a contractor to do business at their home.  As a reputable contractor doing business in the Columbia area for over 13 years, we often meet homeowners that have expectations of sub-par value and communication that is even worse. One obstacle we must overcome when meeting with prospective customers is convincing them to trust in our ability to make a new outdoor living addition look and flow as if it was original to their home.

Our attention to detail is impeccable!

Our attention to detail is impeccable!

Designing and building an outdoor space that appears original to your home is one of Archadeck’s areas of expertise. Along with providing you a structure built with only the best materials and craftsmanship, our goal is also to ensure your new addition appears and functions as if it was always part of your existing home, not an add-on without consideration of traffic flows or matching existing materials. We make every effort to ensure a unified presentation from the ground up — and this often means overcoming obstacles along the way. Such is the case with our recent sunroom addition in NE Columbia.

NE Columbia, SC, sunroom addition by Archadeck of Central SC.

As you can see from the pictures, the custom sunroom addition sits between two primary parts of the existing home. Our goal was to make the new area blend in from a structural, aesthetic and traffic standpoint. This required complicated roof tie-ins along with identifying and locating matching materials to mimic the charm of the existing home. Our team worked diligently in duplicating the style and color of brick used in the original home’s foundation as well as matching the sunroom exterior with the home’s existing Hardieplank siding. As an added bonus we even designed the foundation to include valuable storage space. This project was a labor of love as we realize the importance of maintaining a home’s originality in all our outdoor living space designs.

The finished project is like a dream come true for the homeowners. The new outdoor room fits all their needs and allows the effortless flow from sunroom to home and into their backyard.

In honor of National UV Awareness Month, Archadeck of Central SC discusses the health-conscious benefits of covered outdoor spaces

Spring in Central SCThere are many benefits to adding a covered outdoor living space such as a sunroom, screened  porch or covered porch to your home. However the first benefit that comes to mind is probably increased outdoor living enjoyment. Enjoyment IS a major factor when designing a covered outdoor living space, however, the benefits do not end there. In honor of July being observed as National UV Safety Awareness month, Archadeck of Central SC would like to point out the protective benefits of having a covered outdoor structure. Covered spaces are most beneficial serving as a shelter from dangerous UV rays that can lead to skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. More than 1 million cases of skin cancer are found in the United States each year. Melanoma, the most deadly of skin cancers, only accounts for about 4 percent of all skin cancer cases, however, it causes about 79 percent of skin cancer deaths. According to the American Cancer Society, it is predicted that 1,540 new cases of melanoma of the skin will be diagnosed in South Carolina alone during 2016.

The need to protect your skin from the sun has become very clear over the years, supported by several studies linking overexposure to the sun with skin cancer. The harmful ultraviolet rays from both the sun (and tanning beds) can cause many other complications besides skin cancer – such as a weakened immune system, age spots, wrinkles and leathery skin.

Since most of the melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer cases are directly related to sun exposure, skin cancer prevention and awareness education could greatly reduce the number of those affected. This includes being cautious and limiting the amount of exposure you get in your uncovered outdoor living space.

Archadeck specializes in both covered and uncovered outdoor living space designs. We can address your specific needs and desires in order to determine what type, or combination of, outdoor structure is the right “fit” for your lifestyle. For some homeowners, just having a deck or patio is not enough as their outdoor living space must meet specific needs. These can include sensitivity and concern about UV light, allergies and even SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).

This custom pergola addition in Central SC offers a shady, protected spot for outdoor living!

Some of our most popular protected structures include sunrooms, 3 and 4 season rooms, screened porches, covered porches and patios and even shade pergolas. With this in mind we want to take this opportunity to point out benefits of having a covered outdoor space on your property:

  • Greatly enhances the look and curb appeal of your home and landscape
  • Adds value to your home
  • Is a comfortable way to enjoy the outdoors
  • Is a great place for plants to thrive
  • Provides emotional benefits of sunlight (increased Vitamin D and stress reduction) without harmful UV rays
  • Can become a sanctuary protected from sudden thunderstorms or inclement weather

Central SC Sunrooms give you a front row seat to Mother NatureA sunroom or screened porch offers a more protected setting and delivers these added benefits of an enclosed space:

  • Creates a room free from the irritants of seasonal allergies
  • Is also a dining area with a clear barrier against pesky mosquitos and stinging insects
  • Is a pollen-free outdoor living room
  • We can install treated screens to reduce harmful rays

Our custom covered outdoor living spaces are designed to protect without reducing your connection with nature. From a simple front porch to a complete outdoor entertainment area, our structures will transform your home and the way your live outdoors significantly.

Sunshine provides a purpose when you build a sunroom

Imagine waking up in the morning, making that cup of coffee and being able to enjoy it outdoors, rain or shine. With a sunroom, you can! Imagine waking up in the morning, making that cup of coffee and being able to enjoy it outdoors, rain or shine. With a sunroom, you can! Sunrooms typically feature elegant floor-to-ceiling windows that will leave you appreciating your landscape and view all year round. These windows host a breeze in the spring and warmth of the sun in the winter. With so much glass, there is little obstruction for enjoying more of the outdoors, making it feel as if you are sitting alongside your flower beds or under the trees without even having to step outside.

A sunroom can take on many shapes and sizes. Whether you are looking to build a second living room for your family to enjoy together, or create a quaint room to cozy up and read a good book in, a sunroom is your answer. It can be designed with closed off doors or a wide open space lengthening the room you choose to build from. Not only does this create more space within your home, it also increases the value of your home. Since a sunroom is an addition, it is built with an HVAC system. An HVAC system’s purpose is to provide thermal comfort and acceptable indoor air quality. This means keeping your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Central SC Sunrooms give you a front row seat to Mother Nature

Sunrooms don’t just provide a versatile environment for you and your family. They also function as a climate-controlled greenhouse for plants and flowers that need a little extra TLC throughout the winter season. Orchids, hibiscus, parlor palms and ficus are a few plants that thrive on filtered sunlight. These tropical plants prefer to be warm and sunny and won’t survive without it. Not only does the sunroom provide an environment for the plants but it also provides a ‘tropical’ oasis for you and your family during those colder months.

Having trouble growing orchids? A sunroom provides the perfect environment!

Having trouble growing orchids? A sunroom provides the perfect environment!

Even during the warmer months, it’s not always your first choice to spend the day or evening outside. Often times, going outside can pose more issues than necessary, from pollen collecting on your furniture to mosquitoes eating you alive. As we all know, pollen falls likes snow in South Carolina and can take over the outdoor space fairly quickly. Protecting your outdoor furniture from pollen stains, while also protecting your family from uncomfortable bug bites, can become difficult during the spring and summer seasons. So take pleasure in your comfy cushioned chairs and bring them indoors to enjoy the mesmerizing sunset while avoiding mosquitoes all together. An added bonus in our opinion!

What you need to know when considering a sunroom addition to your home

Sunroom Sitting Area

This sunroom sitting area functions as a secondary living room for this family.

A Sunroom, also referred to as a four-season room, can be a very beneficial addition to your home. Not only do sunrooms provide amazing views to the outdoors in any season, they also add valuable conditioned living space to the interior of the home. Sunrooms can serve a multitude of functions. Due to the nature of their design, sunrooms also allow more natural light into the home than a traditional interior room addition.

What we often hear from our customers is that “we use our sunroom more than any other room in the house“. Archadeck of Central SC believes this is because the homeowner(s) have a need that their house doesn’t meet, and a specially designed sunroom addition fulfills that need (whether it is for sewing, reading, or a multitude of functions).

What differentiates sunrooms from other kinds of structures are the many windows, rather than screens, that immediately satisfy the conflicting desires for nature and comfort. It’s a place to enjoy your morning coffee and newspaper with a lovely view of your garden or landscape, a protected area for children and pets to enjoy the sun, the perfect place for a midday luncheon or afternoon book club meeting and a great place to unwind after a long, hard day of work.

A sunroom allows you to enjoy being outside without worrying about heat, cold, rain, harmful UV rays, pollen or insects — especially those dangerous mosquitoes! You can relax while you take in the view of your beautiful surroundings from the comfort of an enclosed room no matter what elements are thrown your way. Archadeck of Central South Carolina can custom design and build a sunroom for you and your family that will protect you from the ravages of weather and Mother Nature while benefitting you in so many other ways.

This spacious sunroom in Columbia, SC, delivers versatility within the home.

According to an article published in Reader’s Digest, “A sunroom can provide you with an oasis in your home and help you lower your heating bill. But there’s a lot to consider if you want to create one for yourself.”  Having the benefit of an experienced sunroom contractor, such as Archadeck, can ensure that you get a quality sunroom to fit your home, your lifestyle and your budget.

Our sunrooms are designed to be enjoyed year-round.  With this in mind, Archadeck of Central SC can help decide optimal placement for your room —  the first critical step when planning a sunroom addition.

  • Central SC Sunrooms give you a front row seat to Mother NatureIdeal Placement

In northern climes, a southern exposure is best because it will receive the most light each day. Here in the South, however, a southern exposure means additional cooling may be necessary. An eastern exposure will ease cooling needs by providing sun in the morning and shade the rest of the day — whereas a western orientation will give you afternoon sun that might require shading through window treatments. A northern exposure will provide lower levels of light and partial shade most of the day and may eliminate the need for window treatments or additional cooling.

With so much glass, any sunroom can present heating and cooling challenges. By using the newer, more innovative types of glass, insulation and roofing, you can keep your space comfortable without wasting excess energy to help regulate heat and cold, and to alleviate leakage problems. Other considerations include…

  • Understand right from the start that sunrooms are designed for year-round use and may increase your heating costs, even with a south-facing orientation.
  • You also need to understand that good sunroom design isn’t just about staying warm in winter, either. It’s also about keeping cool during summer months.
  • If you’re looking for comfort, remember that it’s technically easier to heat during the winter than it is to cool during the summer.

Sunrooms are climate-controlled home extensions with the most unencumbered view of the outdoors

Central SC Sunrooms give you a front row seat to Mother Nature

Our sunrooms give you a front-row seat to Mother Nature no matter what the season!

Whether you call it a sunroom, Florida room, patio room, conservatory or a solarium, if forty percent or more of the walls are glass it is technically a sunroom, and that makes it easy to bring the outdoors into your home. Through the development and use of improved materials and design, the three major issues with sunrooms of years gone by — heat loss, heat gain and leaks — are things of the past. With a sunroom by Archadeck of Central South Carolina, you comfortably stay indoors, with air conditioning and heat, while still enjoying the view outside.

The common misconception that sunrooms are most beneficial during the winter couldn’t be further from the truth, especially here in the central South Carolina area. Like a climate-controlled greenhouse, sunrooms are ideal for growing a variety of exotic plants such as orchids, philodendron, ficus, parlor palms and peace lilies, as well as providing a beautifully nature-enhanced space where you can dine, entertain and relax throughout every season.

You can enjoy all of these activities in your sunroom without being bothered by pesky insects and the horrible effects of pollen.

With a sunroom, you can enjoy your backyard even in a downpour. Unlike a deck, when you’re in a sunroom a pop-up rain shower can’t run you off from your space, not to mention the fact that you can have comfortable sunroom furniture that won’t be ruined by rain. And talk about a room with a view…for homes with a view of the lake or a private wooded lot, the structural components of a sunroom greatly reduce blockage of those desirable views.

Another advantage of some sunrooms is that light becomes an architectural element, as the contrast of light and shadow plays across the room as the day progresses or as the weather changes. With a custom-designed sunroom, you can make any size area, from a tiny space to a broad one, feel bigger and brighter with the additional natural light the windows provide. Along with all the natural sunlight that will fill your home, the sunroom provides panoramic views of the landscape and allows a birds-eye view of Mother Nature and the ever-changing seasons.

Columbia SC unique sunroom designs for outdoor living

No pollen, mosquitoes or rainy weather will keep you from enjoying the outdoors with a sunroom.

And for those who have been diagnosed with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), the sunlight that flows into a sunroom helps a great deal in combating the winter blues. No more venturing out into a cold front yard during the winter months or a humid one in the summer to feel the morning sun. Having a custom sunroom makes getting that needed sun therapy effortless and something to look forward to.

With so much glass, any sunroom can present heating and cooling challenges. By using the newer, more innovative types of glass, insulation and roofing, you can keep your space comfortable without wasting excess energy to help regulate heat and cold, and to alleviate leakage problems.

Sunrooms add the functionality of a year- round room because they are fully conditioned. The presence of an HVAC system and the “wall of windows” design allows for plenty of natural light and beauty. Though many only consider the extra cost of adding on a sunroom, since it qualifies as an interior addition requiring a foundation and roof, rest assured that it will pay for itself over time. With so many variables, the cost of a sunroom varies, especially when comparing it to the cost of a screened porch and three or four season room. Ask nearly any sunroom owner, and they’ll tell you the cost of a sunroom is well worth its many benefits.
