Columbia, SC three season room with rustic beadboard ceiling, ample dining and seating areas complete with a cozy outdoor fireplace.Unlike decks and patios that are usually exposed to the elements, a porch that is screened and/or covered can extend your autumn and winter time outdoors even if it’s a tad chilly outside. There are plenty of ways to keep your Columbia, SC, porch warm and toasty this fall with some clever ideas that will keep your screened porch family-friendly in cold weather.

Adding a fireplace as part of your porch build is a terrific way to inject ambiance and real warmth into the space. Whether it’s wood burning or gas, you can enjoy the cooler weather with the allure of the flicker of flames and the heat it provides. It is possible to add a fireplace to an already existing porch as well, and Archadeck of Central South Carolina can certainly help you do that if your previous builder did not put one in initially. A fireplace brings instant atmosphere to a porch and is the perfect spot to enjoy marshmallows and hot chocolate with the kids or a delightful outdoor dinner with wine for some romantic time with your love. A fireplace turns your porch into a true outdoor room that is an extension of your indoor space and adds lots of value to your home.

Outdoor Patio HeaterIf budgets are tight or space does not allow, gorgeous outdoor space heaters give you the vibe of an outdoor fireplace with a smaller footprint and a modern flair. You can use an electric or gas one to get the job done in an attractive way that adds plenty of interest on a porch. These affordable heaters come in all shapes, sizes and styles—from traditional to modern—to fit any decorating scheme. There are those that are floor standing and others that you can pop on the table. Some are even ingeniously disguised to look like a lamp if you are worried about aesthetics.  The key is to select one that is rated for outdoor use and specially designed to use in a covered area such as a porch.

Infrared electric heaters can be mounted onto the ceiling or even a wall so they are up and out of the way and push heat down into an open space. You may have noticed these in outdoor restaurant patios in colder temps, but these are now available for residential use, too. They work by using light to directly heat people  within the space instead of heating the air itself, so they are the perfect solution for an open air situation. Instead of wasting money heating the entire area, infrared heaters simply warm those sitting near them. When strategically placed, they are economical and fairly efficient as well.

An outdoor fireplace can add rustic appeal to your outdoor room and keep the space warm in the cooler months.

Since a porch is either open all around or screened in to protect from nasty bugs and poor weather, Archadeck of Central South Carolina gives you the option of turning your existing porch into a three or four season room. We can add a special enclosure that allows for a four-track panel window. This area can be heated in many different ways, from an economical space heater to a ductless heating system with a slim streamlined design or we can even integrate an outdoor fireplace into your porch design. If you want to enjoy a breeze on a beautiful day, you simply slide the window panels open and you are back to feel of a porch again. You get the best of both worlds!

Archadeck of Central SC explores ideas for beating winter’s chill on your porch!

Is this what your screened porch feels like during the winter

Is this what your screened porch feels like during the winter?

It is a common misconception that, much like dealing with the open air space of a deck or patio, porches cannot be weatherized for use during the cooler months. One may assume since the porch (screened or covered) is ventilated with outside air it is not possible to condition it for use in the winter. This assumption may have rung true many years ago, but nowadays there are a host of options when looking to beat the chill and enjoy your porch throughout the cooler months!

Take a peek:

  • Designing your porch from the start with an integrated fireplace: If you are starting from scratch with your porch or screened porch design, know that adding an outdoor fireplace will serve you well in the cooler months as a viable way to make the space warm and cozy. When used in conjunction with a ceiling fan(s),  your porch will be warm enough to enjoy almost year-round. In addition, the fireplace provides ambiance and a focal point of beauty within the space year round. Archadeck of Central SC has designed and constructed many open porch and screened porch additions here in the Columbia area with wood burning and gas fireplaces to the rave reviews of our clients! Keep in mind that adding a custom fire feature is possible for an existing porch, but it is more economical to include as part of your outdoor living design from the start.

  • More than just your traditional electric space heater: Today’s space heaters provide the same function as those of the past, but are designed to look the part inside your porch or screened porch setting. There is a wide selection of electric “plug-in” space heaters available varying in price range to make “cozy” affordable to all porch owners.
  • Gas tabletop heaters

Gas heaters: Smaller gas patio heaters are available, including ones that sit on a tabletop. They use campstove-type fuel canisters and can prove useful for warming guests seated around a table. We do want to point out, when dealing with any type of fuel-powered heater it is vital to make sure the model you choose is approved for use in a covered area, such as a porch or screened porch, and the proper clearance is provided to ensure the unit is safely operable.

  • Custom-Wall-Mounted-Infrared-Patio-Heaters-Ideas

Wall or ceiling-mounted electric heaters: While Infrared electric heaters have been used primarily in commercial settings in the past, smaller ones designed for residential use on patios have been making their way into outdoor living spaces in recent years. These heaters use either infrared elements or halogen bulbs as the heating source. Infrared heating technology produces invisible rays of light that only heat objects and people, not the air. These heaters serve well in situations where it would otherwise be difficult to heat because of the constant opening of doors — much like the setting of a porch. The fact that infrared rays don’t heat air, little of which can be contained on a screened-in porch, makes such a heater a sound, economical choice in these settings. All the heat you’ll pay for goes directly to heating what you want to warm, rather than to heat air that is quickly blown off the porch!

The option of  turning your porch into a three or four season room: Traditional screen porches consist of fixed screened openings and provide protection from both insects and inclement weather. Here in the Columbia area, we take this design a step further by utilizing a four-track enclosure system on many of our screened porch additions. The four- track panel windows will allow you to keep the screened porch feeling.  If you want to transform your screen porch into a room that you can also use year round, your porch can be completely converted to an all-season sunroom. A four-track enclosure enhances the livability of your screened room, including during the winter months by adding a viable source of heat. When the panels are closed, they provide shelter from the summer sun and changeable weather. Our four-track enclosure system is also weather-resistant and shatterproof and opens the door to endless outdoor living possibilities.

Archadeck of Central SC gives you the skinny on deck to outdoor room conversions; what you need to know when considering a 4-season room or sunroom conversion

Open porch and sunroom combination in Elgin, S.C.

This open porch and sunroom combination in Elgin, SC, provides the best of both worlds!

Along with the end of daylight savings time which means the early of arrival of evening here in the South, there is also a chill in the air that signifies the end of the outdoor living season. Just because the outdoor living season has ended doesn’t mean you have to cuddle up inside to keep warm and miss the splendor of nature that is still unfolding all around you. This is the time of year when many homeowners consider the ever-popular option of closing in their existing deck, or a portion of their deck, and converting it into a 4-season room or sunroom that can extend your enjoyment into and beyond the cooler months of the year.

Bright sunny room addition

The bright interior of this sunroom is a sunny solution to even the coldest winter day.

A sunroom provides a place to enjoy nature when the weather conditions create a situation where it may not be ideal to go outside. A sunroom delivers all of the benefits of being outdoors without actually being outdoors. A sunroom is a great place to entertain, spend valuable family time, dine and relax. Because of the abundance of natural light a sunroom is also an ideal place to nurture tropicals and houseplants. Converting a deck into a sunroom will extend your interior living space and add value to your home.

In many cases, Archadeck of Central SC can convert your backyard deck into a sunroom. If you decide that you may want to convert your deck into a sunroom there are prerequisites that need to be addressed prior to moving forward.

The first consideration that has to be addressed is the structural integrity of your existing deck.  Your deck’s substructure must be able to accommodate the weight of a roofed structure. Many decks are not built to withstand the weight of adding a roof. In order for a deck to be able to withstand the weight of a roof, the foundation of the deck will have to extend all the way to the corners of the structure. In cases where the foundation does not extend to the corners, amendments must be made to extend the foundation and new footers will have to be added in order to safely support and hold the weight. Archadeck of Central SC can perform a deck inspection to determine whether your deck fits conversion criteria. Depending on the results of your deck inspection we will discuss our recommendations as to how to proceed with getting the deck structurally compatible to withstand a 4-season room conversion.

Once the issue of foundation reinforcement has been addressed, the next step is to decide which type of conversion would best suit your individual needs. In most cases, this choice will depend on your geographical location, individual needs and whether the area you live in experiences mild or harsh autumns and winters. A four-season room or sunroom conversion serves as an extension of your home’s living area as well as an extension of your outdoor living area. These outdoor rooms give you an unobscured view of nature by the use of numerous windows that sometimes even feel and function as window walls. Sunrooms can be enjoyed year-round even in the event of snow. A sunroom or four season room is what is referred to as “a conditioned space” because it requires an HVAC system just like that of an interior room addition. Or instead you may use a wall- mounted electric inversion heating and cooling system that offers individual room control. Your heating and cooling choice is an important consideration. Choosing the right conditioning medium depends on your needs and budget and should be addressed early into your conversion project.

A benefit of converting your deck into a sunroom or four season room is the freedom of material choices that can be used within to finish out your structure. A whole new realm of design choices open up to sunroom and 4 -season room owners. The same materials that can be used safely within an interior room can become finish options for your sunroom or four season room. These include Sheetrocked walls, carpet, hardwoods and a myriad of other design choices. Another benefit when considering furnishings and decor within your new space is that the furniture used within your structure won’t have to be weatherproof. The world is truly your oyster.
