We are Your Source for Upscale, Unique Outdoor Living Space Designs — Including She Sheds!

Columbia SC She Shed builder

She Shed in Columbia, SC, built by Archadeck of Central SC.

Archadeck of Central South Carolina is Columbia’s only outdoor living space design and build firm that specializes in truly custom structures. With this in mind, we are also the best company to contact if you have a unique, upscale addition in mind. Where many builders only cater to plain-Jane, one-dimensional designs, we can design exactly what you have in mind to enhance your home and property and allow you to lead the outdoor lifestyle you crave!

One such structure trending on social media and on the newsstands is the “She Shed.” A “she shed” is the woman’s answer to the “man cave.” This newest addition to the gender-specific outdoor sanctuary is a backyard haven for busy women seeking a quiet reprieve from the world. Whether it is for reading in solace, gardening, indulging in a hobby or just a place to take an afternoon nap, the popularity of the she shed continues to grow.

Custom garden shed in Columbia SC from sidePopular Country Living Magazine even declared last year the year of the she shed and elaborated on the structure’s popularity in a post titled “Move over ‘Man Caves,’ It’s All About ‘She Sheds’ Now.” The article describes their appeal:  “ladies who are jealous of their partner’s ‘man cave,’ there is finally a solution for you: ‘She Sheds.’ Man caves were born out of the assumption that wives control the home — and a fella needs his own space (read: a converted garage, basement or attic full of ‘his things’). So what’s the idea behind a She Shed? Different styles we’ve seen include an English country-inspired sitting area, a crafting command center, and a retro diner.”

Many times, the impetus of creating a she shed in your own backyard involves updating an existing potting shed or neglected outbuilding located on your property into one of these glamorous backyard destinations. However, it doesn’t always have to be that way,  as is evident through our she shed project in Columbia, SC. Archadeck of Central SC designed and constructed a custom she shed from scratch, and it was covered in an article chronicling the project titled “This garden shed in Columbia, SC, gives new meaning to having a place for everything and everything in its place.” Details of the shed include a concrete floor with a Hardie Plank Siding exterior and a standing seam roof. A cupola graces the roof to top off the exterior.

Archadeck of Central SC was able to repurpose some existing windows the homeowners had left over from their home, and we even added a charming pergola detail atop the side window of the shed.  The open rafter interior boasts an elegant chandelier, an air conditioner cools the space and multiple shelves serve many purposes. It is a workshop for painting, a protected storage space, a studio and a playhouse all rolled into one!

Of course, the Columbia homeowners we created this unique space for are elated. To add even more charm to the property, in addition to the she shed we  also installed a custom romantic-inspired gate reminiscent of those seen in English gardens of a by-gone era. This entire project is a great example of the individuality we pour into our custom designs. If you imagine it, we can build it!

Our careful attention to understanding your outdoor living needs and desires shows in every design we bring to life. Along with this versatile garden shed in Columbia, SC, we also have a large portfolio of completed projects with one-of-a-kind appeal. Take a look…

Now is the best time ever to move forward with your outdoor living structure plans, and here’s why:

Central SC Sunrooms give you a front row seat to Mother NatureOf all the questions homeowners ask when planning their outdoor living space, the most frequent is undoubtedly  “WHEN is the best time to build?” While there is no unanimously correct answer to this question,  many factors come into play in order to satisfy each individual project. These can be lifestyle related, budgetary or even include preparations for HOA approvals. However, the answer comes down to your readiness to pursue your outdoor living addition. If you are ready, then there is definitely no time like the present to get the ball rolling!

Here in the Columbia area, we are blessed with a mild climate virtually year-round. With no danger of having to deal with frost-lines, and very little snow or icy weather, it is possible to begin your project in the winter and have it completed by the time it is warm enough to enjoy open-air structures such as decks or patios. Choosing a cooler-season project can also add unexpected benefits and value to your anticipated  outdoor living project.

Here are just a few advantages of choosing a fall/winter project timeline:

  • Patio in the fallLess Wait Time = More Enjoyment Sooner –– A good incentive to begin your outdoor living structure addition in the cooler months is that you’ll encounter less wait time before construction can begin. Gaining approval through HOAs and permitting may take less time because there is less backlog now. Deciding to build now will now mean you’re able to enjoy the benefits of your new structure sooner and in plenty of time for the arrival of the outdoor living season in the warmer months ahead. Keep in mind, when dealing with a quality builder, wait times can be longer, especially during the warm seasons. Deciding on a fall/winter project can greatly reduce those wait times.
  • Double pergolas on West Columbia SC wooden deck by Archadeck of Central SCThe Science of Wood — If you are considering a structure built from wood, a cooler-month project timeline will provide many benefits. Wood requires a time period of acclimation and curing. The laws of expansion and contraction always apply when it comes to working with wood. All wood is hygroscopic, meaning that when exposed to air, it will release or pick up moisture until it is level with the humidity and temperature of the air. Humid conditions, such as those in summer, will cause more rapid expansion and contraction of wood that is not yet sealed for protection against the elements. A structure built from wood needs to cure for a period of time before the sealer or paint will properly adhere to the wood and promote beneficial protection qualities. By choosing to build during the fall and winter, the least humid times of year, your new wooden deck or other outdoor structure may require less time to cure in order to properly accept the sealer or paint you choose.
  • Covered porch in NE Columbia outdoor combination projectThe Dormant Landscape — Your lawn and landscape will experience less stress from construction if you choose to build during the cooler months of the year — this is because most turf grasses, trees and shrubs and other perennials are in their dormant period during the winter. When dormant, these grasses and plants are less likely to experience permanent damage from being  trimmed or pruned to accommodate the addition of a backyard structure. This includes foot traffic from the construction crew.
  • Less Stress –Aside from the landscape, construction during the winter will cause less of an interruption to your day-to-day lifestyle as most people use their yards less during these months. The kids are in school and less likely to be playing outside during this time. The noise and materials required to complete your project will be less of an annoyance than they would be when you are using the yard a lot during the warmer months.
  • Archadeck 2013 PhotographyActing NOW = More Value — It is no secret that costs of materials used in outdoor living space designs, either wood or composite, can increase when moving into a new year. Choosing to move ahead with your project now will save you money in the long run on materials costs, and in addition if you intend to finance your new outdoor structure, the interest rates are still extremely low. Even if our project timeline extends into the next calendar year, if you decide on your design and sign the contract prior to December 15th, 2015, you will lock into this year’s pricing. For many homeowners, the savings  are reason enough to move ahead with getting all the logistics in place now, instead of waiting until later.

Archadeck of Central SC Explores the Popularity of the “She Shed” in Outdoor Living Design

Columbia SC She Shed builder

She shed in Columbia, SC, built by Archadeck of Central SC.

In a specialty design world that has long been governed by the fancies of men’s outdoor activities comes the arrival of a structure in the backyard a woman can call her own — the “she shed.” A “she shed” is the woman’s answer to the “man cave.” This newest addition to the gender-specific outdoor sanctuary is a backyard haven for busy women seeking a quiet reprieve from the world. Whether it is for reading in solace, gardening, indulging in a hobby, or just a place to take an afternoon nap surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature, the popularity of the she shed continues to evolve and grow.

Sometimes, A Gal Just Needs A Moment To Herself!

She sheds come in all shapes and sizes but share a few general design characteristics in common.

  • A detached structure away from the home itself, usually tucked into the landscape or garden.
  • Enclosed under a roof in order to protect contents from inclement weather and insects.

In many cases a she shed can be little more than a storage building customized to reflect the owner’s tastes and interests. More elaborate custom she shed designs can include electricity, A/C and heating and even exquisite crystal chandeliers dangling from the rafters! When it comes to design options for creating a one-of-a-kind backyard getaway, “she sheds” know no limits. There are no rules to building a she shed; they can be anything you want them to be, and much more!
