Caught Between A Deck And A Hardscape? These Sumter, SC, Clients Show You How It’s Done

When Archadeck of  Central SC first consulted with these Sumter, SC, homeowners we arrived at their home to find an aging wooden deck that was falling apart.  This is a common discovery in many of the back yards we visit in the Midlands.  Whether we find a builder-grade deck with minimal thought given to its design or an aging wood deck past its prime, our task is to restore backyard benefit to our clients.

Sumter SC custom hardscapes

Many times, clients with aging or failing wooden decks will opt to rebuild their deck using wood. We also have many that upgrade to low-maintenance synthetic decking. In the case of these Sumter homeowners, they chose to go with a custom hardscape this time instead of a deck. Not only are hardscapes easy to maintain, but the low-to-grade requirements needed on this particular home also made choosing a patio as a replacement a real no-brainer!

Take a look at the Before images of this project prior to removal of the existing deck:

Not only does the new custom patio fulfill their need for a low-to-grade outdoor living space design, it also opened the door (no pun intended) to enhanced accessibility from the back of the home. Before, with their existing deck, the homeowner had to exit their back door and enter the deck to the left using the sidewalk. Now, their outdoor living space is directly accessible right through the back door, eliminating the awkward transition completely.

The custom patio also includes an integrated wood-burning fire pit!

Why choose a paver patio, you may ask…

Paver patios open up a wide range of design possibilities like no other outdoor living structure can. Homeowners can integrate different structural elements, textures and colors in order to craft a space that enhances their outdoor enjoyment.

Paver patios, in particular, are becoming more popular with Columbia-area homeowners looking for low maintenance, durability and stability in their outdoor living space. A low-maintenance backyard structure requires very little attention on the part of the homeowner aside from simple maintenance using common-sense practices. With a low-maintenance surface, all that’s required is keeping leaves blown off the patio, cleaning up mud where the dog tracked it from the yard on a rainy day, etc.

Our custom paver patios work well as part of an outdoor living space combination with a deck or porch, around a pool or to highlight your landscape. Patios are the perfect space to complete a backyard retreat. Professionally-installed paver patios are as reliable, stable and long-lasting as concrete. The minimal maintenance requirements of a paver patio trump the time you spend laboring over the constant cleaning, staining and maintenance of a wooden deck.

These homeowners are elated with their new backyard space. Just read the review they left on Google about their experience:

This company is great and they do wonderful work. Marshall helped us out tremendously and made our house/yard look incredible. I would highly recommend their outdoor living designs to anyone.

Is A Columbia Custom Patio Or Hardscape Outdoor Living Space The Right Fit For You?

You probably already know Archadeck of Central SC as the Columbia area’s source for decks, porches and sunrooms. However, did you know we design and build custom patios and hardscape outdoor living spaces, too? That’s right!

Lake Murray patio, retaining wall and custom fire pit

A custom patio or hardscape space can easily turn an empty backyard into an elaborately-decorated outdoor feature. The perfect spot to relax, entertain and cook. Patios are making a comeback at all stages of the market as one of the most-desired design options for backyards all over the map. Currently, we have several hardscape outdoor living combination projects underway and throughout our project portfolio. Many of these include both horizontal and vertical hardscape elements, as well as amenities such as outdoor kitchens, pergolas and more. With the popularity of pavers, stone and stain & stamp patios on the rise in the Columbia area, we thought it only fitting to discuss this outdoor living option.

Central SC patios

Columbia stain & stamp patio under construction.

Hardscape options galore — we offer a wide selection of hardscape materials giving you an almost endless choice in patio design options. Your patio can be built with pavers, natural stone like flagstone or travertine and even ceramic tile. Stain and stamp concrete is another option that gives you the look of stone or pavers at a fraction of the cost. Our portfolio includes a variety of hardscape shapes, colors and styles to achieve your desired look and to fit any budget.

Patios deliver high aesthetic with low maintenance — Our patios are professionally designed and installed using only the best hardscape materials. This ensures a hardscape with longevity that is also a breeze to maintain. A patio requires very little attention from the homeowner and doesn’t require annual resealing like a wooden deck.

Patios provide a high return on investment —  patios that are professionally designed and installed will yield a 30-60% return on investment if you ever decide to sell your Columbia-area home. In the long run, that same patio addition will enhance the functionality of your outdoor living area and become a beloved backyard destination — benefits you cannot put a price on.

Patios work well in unison with other outdoor structures — Patios serve well when used in conjunction with other outdoor structures such as a deck, porch or outdoor room. This is what we refer to as an outdoor living environment. For many of our clients, an outdoor living space needs to be multifunctional. If that’s the case, our designers will create a space that flows yet defines separate spaces for different purposes.

Archadeck of Central SC Discusses How a Successful Outdoor Living Combination Space Goes Together Like Peas and Carrots!

Archadeck of Central SC Discusses How a Successful Outdoor Living Combination Space Goes Together Like Peas and Carrots! When it comes to gaining the most benefit out of something, it stands to reason that combining two or more of what you like will bring you the most enjoyment. Examples of the power behind combinations are evident in many everyday things. For instance, just within the food and drink realm many of the combinations we take for granted include the successful pairing of a loaded baked potato as a companion to a steak, wine and cheese, apple pie and vanilla ice cream and even peas and carrots! Respectfully, many of the things we enjoy have a second or third accompaniment to make them even more decadent, so why should our outdoor living spaces be any different?

Archadeck patios and hardscapesCombination projects are a great way to create more space for more versatility and enjoyment, and by combining one or more outdoor structures you can designate different areas within them for different purposes. During the initial consultation with our clients, one of the first questions we ask  is “how do you intend to use the space?” Without getting the answer to this important question, the design won’t be as good as it can be. Though the answer varies with each client, from cooking and entertaining to sunbathing, birdwatching and relaxing, they all address the way a particular client wants to live outdoors. For many of our clients, their outdoor living spaces need to be multifunctional. If this is the case for you, Archadeck of Central SC needs to create a project with a flow that defines separate spaces for different functions.

Many of our clients have chosen combination outdoor living spaces, including a deck with a screened porch or pergola, patio with outdoor kitchen, etc. Here are some examples of combination outdoor living space projects taken from our portfolio:

Quadruple the outdoor living pleasure in Wildewood

This combination space in the Wildewood community of East Columbia delivers the whole enchilada of outdoor living enjoyment! The flowing design incorporates a low-maintenance deck, covered porch, stamped concrete patio, outdoor kitchen and a fire pit! The largest benefit of this layout is that each structure within can be enjoyed singularly, but when combined they create a total outdoor living environment.

A grand entrance from the backyard onto this deck and covered porch combo in Governors Grant Lexington SCDeck and Covered Porch Combination in Lexington

Prior to this addition, the only outdoor living space these Lexington homeowners had was a screened porch. Our outdoor living combination design took this backyard to a whole new level. In addition to the spacious and relaxing deck and covered porch addition, we also replaced the home’s existing rear bay window with convenient Pella doors. This made accessing the new outdoor area a breeze and unified the traffic flow of the new space with that of the screened porch.

NE Columbia deck and sunroom builderSunroom and deck in NE Columbia

By choosing to combine a sunroom and deck, these NE Columbia clients got the best of both worlds, an open-air space perfect for grilling and soaking in the sun and a protected space delivering panoramic views of the outdoors with constant climate control.

Stunning sunroom addition in NE Columbia, SC.

The airy design of the sunroom, which opens out onto the new deck, features an open-end gable abundant with windows, transoms and a vaulted ceiling. The placement of the windows and roof pitch allows for an open and airy atmosphere with more light flowing naturally into the home’s interior.

As you can clearly see from these project images, outdoor living combinations can be used as separate rooms, or vignettes, of beauty and function. Whether it’s a pairing of two or more outdoor structures, our keen eye for design will give you a space that functions as one large, cohesive design.

See how a new custom-designed hardscape/patio adds value and versatility to your outdoor living space

As a natural extension of the home’s ground floor, a patio significantly expands a family’s living and entertaining space. It provides a perfect gathering spot for guests and family who will be drawn indoors to this enticing space. Concrete and paver patios are attractive, weather resistant, and extremely functional for your outdoor recreation and entertaining needs. When you install a custom-designed patio in your yard, you will create a beautiful new space that is perfectly suited to your home. Here is a quick look at some of the great benefits of a concrete patio.

Versatility

Archadeck patios and hardscapesA hardscape will provide you with fantastic design versatility as well as functional versatility. No matter the style and landscaping of your yard, you will be able to create a patio that matches your taste with the use of pavers or special stamping and shaping tools that will allow you to make your new concrete patio your very own. The physical structure lends itself to a multitude of uses: wheel in a portable bar and you’ve got a great place for cocktails and mingling; add several seating arrangements and the conversation circles abound; place a large dining table and chairs in the center and you’re ready for dinner party al fresco; or clear the whole space, turn up the tunes and you and your guests can dance the night away!

Durability

Along with being incredibly versatile, patios are also extremely durable. When you install a new hardscape in your yard, you will be creating a highly functional space that can stand up to the demands of daily life and will last for many years to come. Your patio will withstand inclement weather such as snow and rain.

NE Columbia patio and custom fire pitEase of Maintenance

A patio is easy to maintain. Unlike a wooden structure, hardscapes will not become damaged by termites or extreme weather conditions. In addition, your patio will be incredibly easy to clean on a routine basis.

These benefits show just how versatile and valuable a hardscape/patio can be. Now imagine it as part of your combination outdoor living space, as a second layer of functionality and beauty…just as it is in both of these recently completed Archadeck of Central South Carolina projects:

NE Columbia fire pit and patio addition.

NE Columbia fire pit and patio addition.

Our Northeast Columbia project combined a fire pit and patio with a step down into backyard. The hardscape area of this outdoor living space provides a conversation area surrounding the fire pit and ample space for the homeowner and guests to mingle and socialize while enjoying the warmth and beauty of the fire. Truly a masterful combination of structures and space for these homeowners to enjoy.

At this Lake Murray home, we custom designed and built an outdoor living combination space that included a patio, retaining wall and fire pit along with a screened porch and a deck. To further stretch the enjoyment time, each structure in this outdoor living oasis is constructed with low maintenance materials. The patio is made of stamped concrete, the retaining wall and fire pit use synthetic stone facing, the screened porch is aluminum and the deck is constructed with AZEK composite decking in Hazelwood. As you can see in the pictures above, this stunning design is quite an extensive project and totally transforms this backyard. The patio is vital to the flow of the design and connects the deck to the fire pit. Simply GORGEOUS!

Is a Fire Pit Right for You?

Is a fire pit right for youIf you would like to extend the use of your backyard into the colder months, a fire pit may be the answer. When considering having a fire pit installed, here are some thoughts to consider:

Choices – the major decisions you will need to make when designing a fire pit are:

  • Natural stone or manufactured block
  • Designed for wood fire or gas
  • Location as to where to put the fire pit, and what kind of surrounding area do you want
Central SC firepit with retaining wall

Central SC firepit integrated into a patio with retaining/seating wall.

Materials – A natural stone fire pit is beautiful. It can be the landmark of a beautiful outdoor living space and a great place to spend time with your friends and family. The color choices are unlimited, and every custom-made natural stone fire pit is unique. It is also an expensive option – think two to three thousand depending on size and location. Natural stone is likely to crack (or even explode) due to direct contact with heat. If you are going to invest in a natural stone wood-burning fire pit, we recommend using a fire-brick liner to keep the stones from getting excessively hot. If you make this kind of investment you want it done right so that it will last.

Manufactured block makes a nice fire pit at less than half the cost of natural stone. It’s not as artistic, but it is very functional and can be the site of many good times. Also today there are many styles of landscaping block to meet your tastes. These projects range from the do-it-yourself kits from Lowe’s or Home Depot for two hundred dollars to professionally designed and installed projects which can cost between seven hundred and one thousand, five hundred. A block fire pit doesn’t necessarily need a heat liner, though use of a metal ring or fire brick may reduce cracking or excessive drying out and thus extend the life of the block.

Central SC firepit in actionWood or Gas – A wood fire can be enchanting as well as warming. When considering wood for a fire pit the primary driver is the charm of a natural fire. Design considerations include ensuring that the bottom of the pit will drain when it rains, and determining where fire wood is going to be stored.

Gas compared to wood has many pro’s and con’s. Gas is easier to start and quicker to extinguish, has less smoke, takes less effort to tend, and there is no need to buy and store fire wood. Gas fire pits are less costly to design for drainage and have less need for fire brick liners. On the other hand, it may be more expensive to install depending on where gas lines have to be run. Also you will want to design the structure so that if something goes wrong with the lines or the ignition electronics, you can access the parts in need of repair. A wide variety of glass crystals and beads are available for gas fire pits to enhance the look of the finished product.

In the end, the choice between wood or gas comes down to what works best for you.

Archadeck of Central SC is your one stop for hardscapes in addition to our diverse menu of outdoor living structures

Elegant deck, pergola and patio by Archadeck

Is an elegant deck, pergola and patio outdoor living combination your ideal of a dream backyard? If so, we can make it a reality.

Within the genre of outdoor structures the term hardscape requires some elaboration. Hardscapes include patios, retaining walls, planters, outdoor fire features and any structures created from concrete, stone (synthetic or natural), brick or pavers.

Garden at Bilmore House

A peek at one of the gorgeous gardens designed by Frederick Law Olmsted at the Biltmore House Estate.

In the beginning… The origin of hardscapes takes us all the way back to 1873, when Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape designer many consider to be the Father of American landscape architecture, was commissioned to design the grounds of the US Capitol building. Much of this commission consisted of architectural elements to enhance the natural setting around the Capitol. These included lampposts, fountains, seating walls and paths. Olmsted also played a role in the creation of much of the landscape for the well-known Biltmore House and Gardens in Asheville, NC. Modern-day landscape architects coined the phrase “hardscape” about 100 years later as a way to distinguish these elements from the natural and botanical components of Olmsted’s work. Once only used among landscapers, the term “hardscape” is now widely used throughout the world of outdoor design and among the general population.

Benefits of using a hardscape… Hardscape structures, like patio spaces,  continue to increase in popularity because they are low-maintenance and add value and durability to your outdoor space. There is a wide selection of structures you can build to enhance either a void space or an existing outdoor living space. A hardscape will enhance your outdoor living space and will pay for itself in the long run. By adding a hardscape feature such as a patio or outdoor fire feature to your outdoor living area you can add depth, texture and rustic appeal. This is accomplished by mingling the natural elements hardscapes provide which create a tactile feature that you can see and feel. Take a look at just a few of the patio and outdoor living space combinations possible in this video created by Archadeck of Central SC

Combining structures that work in unison will give you the freedom to designate a separate function for each space. A hardscape patio is considered part of your landscape, whereas decks and porches are generally connected in some way to your existing home. A patio is the perfect structure to flow from a deck, porch or 3-season room and adds functional outdoor living space. Patios are also considered low-maintenance, which is an often overlooked benefit of owning a hardscape. Patios are easy to maintain and keep clean. If something happens to one paver, it can be removed and replaced without disrupting the structure around it.

rounded planter area to the rounded deck and stunning patio.

This space includes a low-maintenance deck, patio and rounded planter. A perfect example of the way hardscapes can enhance a deck or porch.

Hardscape and patio additions go together beautifully with decks, porches, three and four-season rooms and even sunroom additions. No matter which type of outdoor living space you have in mind, a hardscape will add a layer of function, beauty and style.
