A custom patio or hardscape space can easily turn an empty backyard into an elaborately-decorated outdoor feature. The perfect spot to relax, entertain and cook. Patios are making a comeback at all stages of the market as one of the most-desired design options for backyards all over the map. Currently, we have several hardscape outdoor living combination projects underway and throughout our project portfolio. Many of these include both horizontal and vertical hardscape elements, as well as amenities such as outdoor kitchens, pergolas and more. With the popularity of pavers, stone and stain & stamp patios on the rise in the Columbia area, we thought it only fitting to discuss this outdoor living option.

Hardscape options galore — we offer a wide selection of hardscape materials giving you an almost endless choice in patio design options. Your patio can be built with pavers, natural stone like flagstone or travertine and even ceramic tile. Stain and stamp concrete is another option that gives you the look of stone or pavers at a fraction of the cost. Our portfolio includes a variety of hardscape shapes, colors and styles to achieve your desired look and to fit any budget.

Patios deliver high aesthetic with low maintenance — Our patios are professionally designed and installed using only the best hardscape materials. This ensures a hardscape with longevity that is also a breeze to maintain. A patio requires very little attention from the homeowner and doesn’t require annual resealing like a wooden deck.

Patios provide a high return on investment —  patios that are professionally designed and installed will yield a 30-60% return on investment if you ever decide to sell your Columbia-area home. In the long run, that same patio addition will enhance the functionality of your outdoor living area and become a beloved backyard destination — benefits you cannot put a price on.

Patios work well in unison with other outdoor structures — Patios serve well when used in conjunction with other outdoor structures such as a deck, porch or outdoor room. This is what we refer to as an outdoor living environment. For many of our clients, an outdoor living space needs to be multifunctional. If that’s the case, our designers will create a space that flows yet defines separate spaces for different purposes.

Our Recent Covered Porch Addition in Elgin, SC, Exemplifies Exceeding Project Expectations

elgin-sc-backyard-retreatArchadeck of Central SC recently completed a covered porch addition in Elgin, SC. The porch was constructed with wood and fiberglass columns and features an open gable end with an exposed rafter ceiling on the interior of the space. However, this project encompasses so much more than just the high-quality materials we used or the inventive characteristics of the design. Listen to how the homeowner describes the addition of the porch cover to understand what we mean…

The homeowners have lived in this home for the last 23 years and they love every aspect of their home. However, they have a heavily-wooded lot that makes it difficult to grow lush turf. With this in mind, they decided to turn all of their backyard into a giant outdoor living space. They hired a landscape designer and had all the grass removed and installed gravel walkways and shrubbery beds instead. The backyard now flourishes with evergreens that add vibrancy to the yard for year-round interest.  An added benefit to this transformation is that the entire yard is also super low-maintenance with no mowing required.

elgin-sc-porch-cover

The next step in this transformation was to create the outdoor living structure they envisioned alongside all the landscape improvements. Archadeck of Central SC designed and built the covered porch over their existing hardscape patio located right at the back door of the home. The homeowner said that “the end result is so much more than we could have ever anticipated.” They love the covered porch and the quiet moments and conversation it has inspired. The homeowners are looking forward to enjoying their low-maintenance outdoor lifestyle as we move into spring.

They pointed out that the best thing about Archadeck of Central SC is that we deliver on our promises…” they told us when they were going to start, they started, they came every day, they finished when they said they would and there was always someone there. We would highly recommend Archadeck to anybody based on our experience.”

An Outdoor Room is the Perfect Place to Enjoy the Changing Seasons and Much More!

Archadeck of Central SC Screened Porch Addition

Now is the time of year when many homeowners begin to analyze their interior and exterior living space needs. The upcoming holiday season can bring joy and happiness as beloved friends and family come to call, but it can also bring you to the realization that you need more space! Instead of considering an interior home addition, why not consider an outdoor room addition? Outdoor rooms can provide various levels of comfort while allowing you to enjoy the beauty and splendor of the outdoors during the ever-changing seasons of fall & winter. Archadeck of Central SC has many outdoor room options to suit your needs and budget.

Out of all the outdoor living space designs we build here in the Columbia, SC, area, outdoor rooms promote livability in spite of what Mother Nature may throw your way. Some of the outdoor room we specialize in are screened porches, 3 season rooms and sunrooms. Often, our outdoor rooms are designed as part of an outdoor living combination space that can include a deck, patio, outdoor fireplace or other structure.

Outdoor rooms are similar in the views they provide, however, their protective benefits can be quite different. Screened porches, sunrooms and three season rooms are great examples of sheltered outdoor rooms that extend your living spaces and your hours of leisure at home.

Screened Porches

Screened porches are, in essence, a covered room with screened openings instead of windows. The screening serves as a barrier to bothersome insects and allergens and will reduce the effects of inclement weather. Having a screen porch will give you the opportunity to have an “outdoor” room with reduced exposure to the harsh elements. Since screened porches are shade structures because they are built under the cover of a roof, they also offer superior protection from the sun and heat on those humid South Carolina days.

Three Season Rooms

Three season rooms take the benefits of a screened porch a step further by using a convertible panel system that allows you to use screens or clear panels as you see fit. You can extend the function and versatility of a new or existing screened porch by converting it into a three season room through the use of a convertible panel system such as the ones we offer with our aluminum and vinyl outdoor rooms or via a porch enclosure system. These can be integrated into the initial design of a new screened porch or outdoor room addition, or as an enhancement/upgrade to an existing structure. By simply clicking these panels in, or out, of a fixed position on their effortless four-track system, you can let Mother Nature in, or keep Old Man Winter out! The choice is yours!

Sunrooms

What differentiates sunrooms from other kinds of structures are the many windows, rather than screens, that immediately satisfy the conflicting desires for nature and comfort. It’s a place to enjoy your morning coffee and newspaper with a lovely view of your garden or landscape, a protected area for children and pets to enjoy the sun, the perfect place to host holiday get-togethers and dinners. You can enjoy all of these activities in your sunroom without being bothered by pesky insects and the horrible effects of pollen.

Central SC Sunrooms give you a front row seat to Mother Nature

With a sunroom, you can enjoy your backyard even in a downpour. Unlike a deck, when you’re in a sunroom a pop-up rain shower can’t run you off from your space, not to mention the fact that your comfortable sunroom furniture won’t be ruined by rain. And talk about a room with a view…for homes with a view of the lake or a private wooded lot, the structural components of a sunroom greatly reduce blockage of those desirable views.

In honor of National UV Awareness Month, Archadeck of Central SC discusses the health-conscious benefits of covered outdoor spaces

Spring in Central SCThere are many benefits to adding a covered outdoor living space such as a sunroom, screened  porch or covered porch to your home. However the first benefit that comes to mind is probably increased outdoor living enjoyment. Enjoyment IS a major factor when designing a covered outdoor living space, however, the benefits do not end there. In honor of July being observed as National UV Safety Awareness month, Archadeck of Central SC would like to point out the protective benefits of having a covered outdoor structure. Covered spaces are most beneficial serving as a shelter from dangerous UV rays that can lead to skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. More than 1 million cases of skin cancer are found in the United States each year. Melanoma, the most deadly of skin cancers, only accounts for about 4 percent of all skin cancer cases, however, it causes about 79 percent of skin cancer deaths. According to the American Cancer Society, it is predicted that 1,540 new cases of melanoma of the skin will be diagnosed in South Carolina alone during 2016.

Archadeck of Central SC Screened Porch Addition

The need to protect your skin from the sun has become very clear over the years, supported by several studies linking overexposure to the sun with skin cancer. The harmful ultraviolet rays from both the sun (and tanning beds) can cause many other complications besides skin cancer – such as a weakened immune system, age spots, wrinkles and leathery skin.

Since most of the melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer cases are directly related to sun exposure, skin cancer prevention and awareness education could greatly reduce the number of those affected. This includes being cautious and limiting the amount of exposure you get in your uncovered outdoor living space.

Archadeck specializes in both covered and uncovered outdoor living space designs. We can address your specific needs and desires in order to determine what type, or combination of, outdoor structure is the right “fit” for your lifestyle. For some homeowners, just having a deck or patio is not enough as their outdoor living space must meet specific needs. These can include sensitivity and concern about UV light, allergies and even SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).

  • Adds value to your home
  • Is a comfortable way to enjoy the outdoors
  • Is a great place for plants to thrive
  • Provides emotional benefits of sunlight (increased Vitamin D and stress reduction) without harmful UV rays
  • Can become a sanctuary protected from sudden thunderstorms or inclement weather

Central SC Sunrooms give you a front row seat to Mother NatureA sunroom or screened porch offers a more protected setting and delivers these added benefits of an enclosed space:

  • Creates a room free from the irritants of seasonal allergies

We are wild about our recent outdoor living combination in Wildewood!

Covered porch interior detail in Widlewood, East Columbia, SC.It isn’t often that an outdoor living space delivers on all the key elements of what makes outdoor living so enjoyable. Our most recent project in the Wildewood community in East Columbia, SC, contains all the structures homeowners crave when they imagine the outdoor living space of their dreams. Each structure within can be enjoyed singularly, but when combined they create a total outdoor living environment.

As discussed in a previous post — “The outdoor living structure combination is a trend with proven staying power here in Central SC”— the draw towards outdoor living space combinations persists because they are multifunctional and versatile. Combining different structures is a clear way to define separate areas within an outdoor living zones as opposed to using one singular space to carry out all your desired functions. This Wildewood project is the perfect example of putting this concept into action.

This combination design consists of a low-maintenance deck, covered porch, stamped concrete patio, outdoor kitchen and a fire pit! Let’s explore the dynamics and benefits of each structure and how they work together within the space:

East Columbia SC covered porch builderCovered Porch — Conveniently located just off the rear of the home, and easily accessible to the home’s interior living areas,  lies the covered porch addition. The porch features an open and airy open gable design with a rustic exposed rafter ceiling. The porch floor is a continuation of the beautiful AZEK decking used for the deck and features a parting board for added drama and aesthetics.

Spacious Deck — Located just off the covered porch is the spacious low-maintenance deck. As mentioned above, the deck features AZEK decking, which is scratch and stain resistant, impervious to insects, mold and mildew and is a breeze to keep clean! Custom built-in  bench seating adds valuable seating space and visual interest and helps define the boundaries of the space.

Combination project in Wildewood subd. East Columbia SC

Outdoor Kitchen — The outdoor kitchen and grill area sits conveniently at the end of the deck. It includes a grill, food preparation area and workspace with under cabinet storage. The placement of the kitchen makes entertaining a pleasure as it is easily within reach of the deck, porch and patio areas as well as being a stone’s throw away from the interior kitchen door.

East Columbia Sc outdoor living combination space

Patio and Fire Pit — Located just off the deck, the patio is constructed of stamped concrete and features a stone retaining wall. The retaining wall doubles as a cozy seating wall to enjoy the patio’s integrated fire pit. Form and function creatively mingle as the curves of the fire pit are mimicked throughout the entire design, from the curved stone wall bordering the patio to the curved built-in bench on the deck.

Outdoor living combinations such as this project in Wildewood can be used altogether or as separate rooms– each room a vignette of beauty and function. The most wonderful part of our outdoor living combination designs is that two or more outdoor spaces can function as one large design making harmony an important element of the design.

Now is the best time ever to move forward with your outdoor living structure plans, and here’s why:

Central SC Sunrooms give you a front row seat to Mother NatureOf all the questions homeowners ask when planning their outdoor living space, the most frequent is undoubtedly  “WHEN is the best time to build?” While there is no unanimously correct answer to this question,  many factors come into play in order to satisfy each individual project. These can be lifestyle related, budgetary or even include preparations for HOA approvals. However, the answer comes down to your readiness to pursue your outdoor living addition. If you are ready, then there is definitely no time like the present to get the ball rolling!

Here in the Columbia area, we are blessed with a mild climate virtually year-round. With no danger of having to deal with frost-lines, and very little snow or icy weather, it is possible to begin your project in the winter and have it completed by the time it is warm enough to enjoy open-air structures such as decks or patios. Choosing a cooler-season project can also add unexpected benefits and value to your anticipated  outdoor living project.

Here are just a few advantages of choosing a fall/winter project timeline:

  • Patio in the fallLess Wait Time = More Enjoyment Sooner –– A good incentive to begin your outdoor living structure addition in the cooler months is that you’ll encounter less wait time before construction can begin. Gaining approval through HOAs and permitting may take less time because there is less backlog now. Deciding to build now will now mean you’re able to enjoy the benefits of your new structure sooner and in plenty of time for the arrival of the outdoor living season in the warmer months ahead. Keep in mind, when dealing with a quality builder, wait times can be longer, especially during the warm seasons. Deciding on a fall/winter project can greatly reduce those wait times.
  • Double pergolas on West Columbia SC wooden deck by Archadeck of Central SCThe Science of Wood — If you are considering a structure built from wood, a cooler-month project timeline will provide many benefits. Wood requires a time period of acclimation and curing. The laws of expansion and contraction always apply when it comes to working with wood. All wood is hygroscopic, meaning that when exposed to air, it will release or pick up moisture until it is level with the humidity and temperature of the air. Humid conditions, such as those in summer, will cause more rapid expansion and contraction of wood that is not yet sealed for protection against the elements. A structure built from wood needs to cure for a period of time before the sealer or paint will properly adhere to the wood and promote beneficial protection qualities. By choosing to build during the fall and winter, the least humid times of year, your new wooden deck or other outdoor structure may require less time to cure in order to properly accept the sealer or paint you choose.
  • Covered porch in NE Columbia outdoor combination projectThe Dormant Landscape — Your lawn and landscape will experience less stress from construction if you choose to build during the cooler months of the year — this is because most turf grasses, trees and shrubs and other perennials are in their dormant period during the winter. When dormant, these grasses and plants are less likely to experience permanent damage from being  trimmed or pruned to accommodate the addition of a backyard structure. This includes foot traffic from the construction crew.
  • Less Stress –Aside from the landscape, construction during the winter will cause less of an interruption to your day-to-day lifestyle as most people use their yards less during these months. The kids are in school and less likely to be playing outside during this time. The noise and materials required to complete your project will be less of an annoyance than they would be when you are using the yard a lot during the warmer months.
  • Archadeck 2013 PhotographyActing NOW = More Value — It is no secret that costs of materials used in outdoor living space designs, either wood or composite, can increase when moving into a new year. Choosing to move ahead with your project now will save you money in the long run on materials costs, and in addition if you intend to finance your new outdoor structure, the interest rates are still extremely low. Even if our project timeline extends into the next calendar year, if you decide on your design and sign the contract prior to December 15th, 2015, you will lock into this year’s pricing. For many homeowners, the savings  are reason enough to move ahead with getting all the logistics in place now, instead of waiting until later.
