An Allergy-Free Outdoor Room?

‘Tis the season for pollen and all that implies. Yes, pollen is a sign of beneficial changes occurring in our spring landscapes. And yes, it means the poetic evolution of colorful flowers, lush green foliage and a healthy ecosystem.  However, for those who suffer from seasonal allergies, the arrival of pollen puts a damper on enjoying the outdoors.

Many of us, to some degree, feel the effects of seasonal allergies. Symptoms can range from a little sneezing to severe respiratory problems. According to WebMD, one in five Americans has allergy or asthma symptoms with 55% of the population testing positive to one or more allergens. Additionally, the allergy season has become longer with the ragweed and pollen season increasing by 4 weeks over the last 15 years. Taking all of this into consideration, and the fact that spring through fall are the favored seasons to partake in outdoor living and recreation — what are we to do?

Archadeck sunroom

Allergies can make it difficult to relax on your backyard deck or patio without succumbing to the effects. Fortunately, Archadeck of Central SC has an answer to help reduce the negative effects and enjoy the outdoors — an outdoor room. Outdoor rooms such as a 3-season room or sunroom provide a layer of protection from uncomfortable outdoor temperatures, insects, debris such as dirt, pollen and other allergens, as well as the elements.

In addition to keeping the negative aspects of the season at bay, an outdoor room adds value and versatility to your home. Sunshine, which is plentiful within a sunroom or three-season room, is beneficial to physical and mental health, improving a person’s outlook and increasing energy. A sunroom will allow you to take full advantage of a climate-controlled panoramic view of the beauty and interest in your very own backyard, season after season. Experience the feeling of being outside without actually having to deal with the elements making you sneeze, or itch!

Looking for more function from your porch? Maybe a porch-to-room conversion is the answer!

A porch or screened porch provides a wealth of benefits to make the most of the time you spend outdoors. From giving you a shady spot to escape the sun, or a pop-up summer shower, to lingering at dusk with no worry of mosquitoes thanks to screens. But what if you could take the benefits you enjoy from your covered porch or screened porch to another level? What if you could use the space to your heart’s content without limitations for three, four or even twelve months throughout the year? Archadeck of Central SC wants you to know that in most cases we can convert your existing open or screen porch to a 3-season, 4-season room or sunroom and extend the use and versatility of your space.

If the idea of a porch-to-outdoor-room conversion sparks your interest, here are some points that will have to be addressed:

Use a professional

It is crucial to hire an outdoor structure professional who is knowledgeable about porches, outdoor structures and conversions. Hiring a professional ensures the safety, quality and satisfaction of your project.

SunroomCan your porch take the weight?

The first consideration that has to be addressed is the structural integrity of your existing porch. The substructure must be able to accommodate the weight of added walls, in the case of a covered porch, or windows in the case of a sunroom conversion. In either case, the foundation of the porch will have to extend all the way to the corners of the structure. In cases where the foundation does not extend to the corners, amendments must be made to extend the foundation, and new footers will have to be added in order to safely support and hold the weight. Archadeck of Central SC can perform an inspection to determine whether your porch fits the criteria for a conversion. Depending on these results, we will discuss our recommendations as to how to proceed with getting the porch structurally compatible to withstand a 3-season, 4-season or sunroom conversion.

Previous permitting

South Carolina, like many areas of the country, requires everything a builder does to be properly permitted and inspected. This means the previous structure you have, if it passed inspection, should have been deemed sound as a porch. Even if this is the case, it still may not be structurally sound enough for a conversion. Be aware from the beginning that most builders will only warrant the framed portion of the structure that they build. This means if something goes wrong with the substructure as a result of amendments, you cannot use their warranty anymore. This is why we recommend reinforcing the foundation on all the porches we build.

What suits your fancy?

Once the heavy work has concluded and the structural integrity of your porch is deemed a good candidate for a conversion, the question is what do you want? Deciding which type of outdoor room conversion best suits your needs can be difficult. In most cases, this choice will depend on your budget, geographical location and what you plan to do with the room. For example, a four-season room or sunroom conversion serves as an extension of your home’s living area as well as an extension of your outdoor living area. These outdoor rooms give you unobscured views of nature through the extensive use of windows. Sunrooms can be enjoyed year-round even in the event of snow. A sunroom is considered to be a “conditioned space” because it requires an HVAC system just like that of an interior room addition. A four-season room differs from a sunroom in that it is not considered an interior room addition. However, four-season rooms can be outfitted with amenities that provide comfort, such as ceiling fans, space heaters and the like, which can be turned off when not in use.

Screened Porches

Screened porches are, in essence, a covered room with screened openings instead of windows. The screening serves as a barrier to bothersome insects and allergens and will reduce the effects of inclement weather. Having a screen porch will give you the opportunity to have an “outdoor” room with reduced exposure to the harsh elements. Since screened porches are shade structures because they are built under the cover of a roof, they also offer superior protection from the sun and heat on those humid South Carolina days.

Three Season Rooms

Three season rooms take the benefits of a screened porch a step further by using a convertible panel system that allows you to use screens or clear panels as you see fit. You can extend the function and versatility of a new or existing screened porch by converting it into a three season room through the use of a convertible panel system such as the ones we offer with our aluminum and vinyl outdoor rooms or via a porch enclosure system. These can be integrated into the initial design of a new screened porch or outdoor room addition, or as an enhancement/upgrade to an existing structure. By simply clicking these panels in, or out, of a fixed position on their effortless four-track system, you can let Mother Nature in, or keep Old Man Winter out! The choice is yours!

Sunrooms

What differentiates sunrooms from other kinds of structures are the many windows, rather than screens, that immediately satisfy the conflicting desires for nature and comfort. It’s a place to enjoy your morning coffee and newspaper with a lovely view of your garden or landscape, a protected area for children and pets to enjoy the sun, the perfect place to host holiday get-togethers and dinners. You can enjoy all of these activities in your sunroom without being bothered by pesky insects and the horrible effects of pollen.

Central SC Sunrooms give you a front row seat to Mother Nature

With a sunroom, you can enjoy your backyard even in a downpour. Unlike a deck, when you’re in a sunroom a pop-up rain shower can’t run you off from your space, not to mention the fact that your comfortable sunroom furniture won’t be ruined by rain. And talk about a room with a view…for homes with a view of the lake or a private wooded lot, the structural components of a sunroom greatly reduce blockage of those desirable views.

In honor of National UV Awareness Month, Archadeck of Central SC discusses the health-conscious benefits of covered outdoor spaces

Spring in Central SCThere are many benefits to adding a covered outdoor living space such as a sunroom, screened  porch or covered porch to your home. However the first benefit that comes to mind is probably increased outdoor living enjoyment. Enjoyment IS a major factor when designing a covered outdoor living space, however, the benefits do not end there. In honor of July being observed as National UV Safety Awareness month, Archadeck of Central SC would like to point out the protective benefits of having a covered outdoor structure. Covered spaces are most beneficial serving as a shelter from dangerous UV rays that can lead to skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. More than 1 million cases of skin cancer are found in the United States each year. Melanoma, the most deadly of skin cancers, only accounts for about 4 percent of all skin cancer cases, however, it causes about 79 percent of skin cancer deaths. According to the American Cancer Society, it is predicted that 1,540 new cases of melanoma of the skin will be diagnosed in South Carolina alone during 2016.

The need to protect your skin from the sun has become very clear over the years, supported by several studies linking overexposure to the sun with skin cancer. The harmful ultraviolet rays from both the sun (and tanning beds) can cause many other complications besides skin cancer – such as a weakened immune system, age spots, wrinkles and leathery skin.

Since most of the melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer cases are directly related to sun exposure, skin cancer prevention and awareness education could greatly reduce the number of those affected. This includes being cautious and limiting the amount of exposure you get in your uncovered outdoor living space.

Archadeck specializes in both covered and uncovered outdoor living space designs. We can address your specific needs and desires in order to determine what type, or combination of, outdoor structure is the right “fit” for your lifestyle. For some homeowners, just having a deck or patio is not enough as their outdoor living space must meet specific needs. These can include sensitivity and concern about UV light, allergies and even SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).

What is a convertible outdoor room?

An outdoor room is defined as any outdoor space that can provide a relaxed setting reminiscent of the comforts found within most interior living or family rooms. Covered porches, screened porches, sunrooms, and three & four season rooms are great examples of sheltered outdoor rooms that extend living spaces and the hours of leisure at home. Archadeck of Central SC explores the varied benefits of wooden vs. aluminum screened rooms

Screened in Porches That Blend Right Into Your Home

Archadeck of Central SC specializes in outdoor room additions that blend in seamlessly with your home and landscape.

With all the choices available in the world of outdoor living structures today, sometimes it can be a daunting task to know which outdoor structure addition will best fit your needs. In addition, there are many materials, finishes, textures and colors to select from. One of our goals as an outdoor living space design and building expert is to help educate you regarding material choices in order to help you make the most informed decision about your anticipated outdoor living addition.

Two of our most popular outdoor living spaces are screened porches and three season rooms. We offer both wooden-framed and aluminum outdoor rooms designs. Each of these materials offers varied benefits while still providing the lifestyle enhancement and quality you have come to rely on from Archadeck of Central SC. We have put together a comparison of the benefits of wood versus aluminum when used in a screened porch or three season room addition.

Wooden-Framed Outdoor Rooms

Wooden-framed screened porches and three season rooms are a good fit for creating a space with a natural feel. Wood is a substantial material when your tastes lean more towards the look of a traditional screened porch. Pressure treated pine is not a good candidate for painting. We recommend leaving it natural or applying stain to retain the rustic attributes of natural wood.

From a project timeline perspective, wooden-framed screened porches and three season rooms typically take a little longer to build compared to aluminum. However, for homeowners who love the look and presence of natural wood, it is well worth the wait.

Aluminum-Framed Outdoor Rooms

Our aluminum-framed outdoor rooms are custom-made to order and designed to match your home’s architecture and colors. Unlike other aluminum outdoor room companies’ that are built using a kit, we custom design your outdoor room according to your spatial needs, roof pitch and desired interior amenities. We offer both shed roof and gable roof designs that compliment your existing home. Our gable roofed designs allow for a shingled roof, which we match as closely as possible to your existing roof. Gable roofs also allow for higher ceilings within your outdoor room making it feel more open and airy.

central-sc-aluminum-screened-porches

The build time for an aluminum outdoor room is considerably less than a wooden-framed one — which translates into being able to enjoy it sooner! In addition, maintenance is a breeze since the space will never require the laborious task of staining or sealing, there is no siding to replace in the future, and our shed roof designs don’t require shingles. Aluminum delivers a clean and sleek finish perfect for many of today’s contemporary homes. We offer four color choices in our aluminum outdoor rooms. These include bronze, white and two neutral tones that allow freedom in matching the new room to your home’s trim and architectural details. White remains our most popular aluminum color choice among homeowners in the Columbia area.

Our outdoor rooms will provide years of enjoyment for you and your family no matter which material you choose to use. They will expand your living space and allow you to enjoy the benefits of the outdoors without the undesirable insects, dangerous UV rays and inclement weather.

The perfect space for your man cave could be hiding in the backyard

Archadeck covered porch outdoor livingIt’s said that the humble beginnings of the man cave can be traced back to July 16, 1943. It is on this date that The Batcave, perhaps the most famous man cave in comic book history, premiered in a Batman serial episode titled “The Bat’s Cave.” Tucked away beneath Wayne Manor and accessible by secret entrance, it was an actual cave filled with millionaire playboy Bruce Wayne’s high-tech gadgets and tricked-out vehicles…all the things every man dreamed about as a little boy.

Notice how the right furnishings and accessories enhance the time spent in your space.Everyone deserves a space they can call their own, a space where they can truly relax and be themselves, display their unique collectibles and hang out with the guys to watch the big game.  And, that space doesn’t always have to be inside the home. You don’t have to be stuck down in the basement to watch the games this year. In fact, with the popularity of “outdoor rooms” steadily increasing, many Columbia area homeowners are opting to create their man cave with a covered porch or screened porch custom designed and built by Archadeck of Central South Carolina as their base structure.

Whether you’re creating your exterior man cave, or game cave as they are sometimes called, from scratch or you simply need an upgrade to your existing outdoor living space, consider this list of potential exterior structures for your outdoor recreational room. With so many options, we invite you to consider the benefits of each of these wonderful outdoor structures in order to help you gain better knowledge of which space would best suit your family’s backyard needs.

  • The Covered Porch – Also referred to as “open porches” because they are protected from sun and unpredictable summer rainstorms, the covered porch offers the benefit of circulating fresh air with the bonus of a roof that provides shelter from the elements.

  • The Screened Porch – Giving you all the benefits of a covered porch plus one additional big benefit…protection from bugs! Keeping insects such as mosquitoes out of your man cave is a huge benefit of having a screened porch. Keeping the bugs at bay will enable you to enjoy your porch as the big game goes into overtime without worry of being outside with the mosquitoes.
  • The Three-season room – Sturdier than your average screened in porch or enclosed deck, a three season room addition is a good option for homeowners who want to enjoy outdoor living in style but don’t need the living space available all year long. For the windows, we use single-pane glass windows or a porch enclosure system (the best of both worlds, screen when you want it, or a more enclosed “windowed” room when you want it too) for unfettered use of the space in spring, summer and fall.

Archadeck screen-porch-dry-roof2

All three of these types of exterior structures are the excellent places to relax and unwind, as well as entertain guests. To keep things comfortable year round, have a ceiling fan installed for the warmer months and a propane patio heater for the colder months. If you want to trick your man cave out like Batman’s, accessorize with comfy couches and recliners, an outdoor kitchen complete with refrigerator and pizza oven, giant TV with surround sound, sports memorabilia, dart boards and maybe even a bar.
