We are wild about our recent outdoor living combination in Wildewood!

Covered porch interior detail in Widlewood, East Columbia, SC.It isn’t often that an outdoor living space delivers on all the key elements of what makes outdoor living so enjoyable. Our most recent project in the Wildewood community in East Columbia, SC, contains all the structures homeowners crave when they imagine the outdoor living space of their dreams. Each structure within can be enjoyed singularly, but when combined they create a total outdoor living environment.

As discussed in a previous post — “The outdoor living structure combination is a trend with proven staying power here in Central SC”— the draw towards outdoor living space combinations persists because they are multifunctional and versatile. Combining different structures is a clear way to define separate areas within an outdoor living zones as opposed to using one singular space to carry out all your desired functions. This Wildewood project is the perfect example of putting this concept into action.

This combination design consists of a low-maintenance deck, covered porch, stamped concrete patio, outdoor kitchen and a fire pit! Let’s explore the dynamics and benefits of each structure and how they work together within the space:

East Columbia SC covered porch builderCovered Porch — Conveniently located just off the rear of the home, and easily accessible to the home’s interior living areas,  lies the covered porch addition. The porch features an open and airy open gable design with a rustic exposed rafter ceiling. The porch floor is a continuation of the beautiful AZEK decking used for the deck and features a parting board for added drama and aesthetics.

Spacious Deck — Located just off the covered porch is the spacious low-maintenance deck. As mentioned above, the deck features AZEK decking, which is scratch and stain resistant, impervious to insects, mold and mildew and is a breeze to keep clean! Custom built-in  bench seating adds valuable seating space and visual interest and helps define the boundaries of the space.

Combination project in Wildewood subd. East Columbia SC

Outdoor Kitchen — The outdoor kitchen and grill area sits conveniently at the end of the deck. It includes a grill, food preparation area and workspace with under cabinet storage. The placement of the kitchen makes entertaining a pleasure as it is easily within reach of the deck, porch and patio areas as well as being a stone’s throw away from the interior kitchen door.

East Columbia Sc outdoor living combination space

Patio and Fire Pit — Located just off the deck, the patio is constructed of stamped concrete and features a stone retaining wall. The retaining wall doubles as a cozy seating wall to enjoy the patio’s integrated fire pit. Form and function creatively mingle as the curves of the fire pit are mimicked throughout the entire design, from the curved stone wall bordering the patio to the curved built-in bench on the deck.

Outdoor living combinations such as this project in Wildewood can be used altogether or as separate rooms– each room a vignette of beauty and function. The most wonderful part of our outdoor living combination designs is that two or more outdoor spaces can function as one large design making harmony an important element of the design.

Archadeck of Central South Carolina helped these Elgin, SC, homeowners optimize the year-round use of their covered porch

Central SC outdoor livingWhen you love spending time outside, it’s a natural progression to bring some of the creature comforts of home out into the backyard to create an outdoor living space that can be enjoyed almost year round. In an outdoor living environment custom designed and built by Archadeck of Central South Carolina, you can fully enjoy the beauty of the environment while being ultra-comfortable. We understand your desire to spend more time enjoying your home inside and out and offer multiple ways to improve that experience.

Elgin SC outdoor fire features

Completed outdoor fireplace addition in Elgin, SC.

You can optimize your porch or patio for fall and winter get-togethers by enhancing your existing space. While homeowners in some parts of the country may think that evenings spent in the backyard or outdoor living spaces are coming to an end this time of year, we here in the central South Carolina area feel otherwise. We are blessed with a climate that allows the extended use of our outdoor living spaces throughout the fall and, with a good source of heat, well into the winter months, thus making almost year-round use of our outdoor living environments fully possible.

Getting more use out of their covered porch throughout the year is exactly what these Elgin, SC, homeowners listed as their primary objective when they contacted us. They already had a beautiful covered porch area in which many celebrations, cookouts, parties and family dinners had occurred throughout the spring and summer months as well as countless evenings spent just relaxing and unwinding after a hard day of work. Although this space is obviously well-loved during the spring and summer, they also want to enjoy it during the fall and winter too.

Elgin SC outdoor firepace builder

Addition of outdoor fireplace onto existing Elgin, SC, covered porch.

The best way to accomplish their goal was with the addition of an outdoor heat source, such as a fire pit or a fireplace. What’s better than an outdoor fireplace or fire pit to gather around and share conversation, food, drinks and fun? Not only will a fire feature add some warmth to the chilly air, it will also serve as a social hub and focal point for your outdoor living space. After an onsite inspection of their existing structure and careful consideration of their wants and needs along with the architectural aesthetics of the covered porch, we suggested the addition of an wood-burning outdoor fireplace with an Isokern pumice stone insert.

The homeowners loved this idea and wanted to get started right away so they would begin enjoying it as soon as possible. They chose a brick exterior, which would coordinate with the façade of their home and would also complement the classic style of the porch to add elegant warmth. The special components of this fireplace are the Isokern insert and chimney, which are parts of a modular system made of volcanic pumice that is:

  • the most energy-efficient material to safely contain a fire
  • exceptionally durable and lasts forever
  • more budget friendly than the traditional masonry, metal box or concrete fireplaces

Along with this enhancement to their outdoor living space, they added soft, comfy furniture, fluffy throw blankets and hardy outdoor rugs, all of which are sure to make it their favorite warm and cozy spot during the fall and winter months. Wonderful memories will be made on cool, crisp evenings or lazy afternoons, tucked up in blankets on the couch in front of the warm soft glow of a crackling fire while conversations flow and mugs of hot cocoa are savored.

Are you ready to make your outdoor living space cozy for the upcoming cooler weather seasons? Now is a great time to move ahead with your outdoor living structure endeavors! Fall and winter lead times are shorter, the growing season of your landscape is interrupted less and materials are likely to be less expensive now as opposed to waiting until next spring when the traditional outdoor living season arrives. Archadeck of Central South Carolina can plan, design and build your structure in time to take advantage of festivities of winter. Our professional and talented staff are experts at helping homeowners, like you, get the most out of each season with an outdoor structure custom-built just for you. The versatility of this NE Columbia all-inclusive outdoor living environment is amazing!

we can create the ultimate staycation in your backyard

Archadeck of Central SC can create an all-inclusive outdoor living environment in your own backyard — the ultimate “staycation” destination!

When planning the family vacation, who doesn’t love an all-inclusive resort or vacation package? It’s convenient, has so many choices and everything is taken care of in the package price. This means all the basics are covered, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and most important you’re not spending your relaxation and fun time working out the details or cleaning up…it’s no fuss and no muss. Now imagine that same feeling in your own backyard with a custom all-inclusive, low-maintenance outdoor living space for you to enjoy almost year-round! That’s exactly what Archadeck of Central South Carolina did for these homeowners in the Wildwoode neighborhood located in NE Columbia, SC.

In some areas of life, it’s hard to make everyone happy, but with the right design and materials it was easy to create an outdoor living environment that has everything these homeowners need and want in a low-maintenance space that is so versatile and option rich that it pleases everyone, effortlessly. They wanted a combination of protected and open spaces, in a low-maintenance, multi-level structure, connected to a hardscape area with room for an outdoor kitchen, dining area, conversation areas and an integrated fire feature.

Outdoor oasis in NE Columbia

With a clear list of features and an understanding of what they were envisioning, we went to work laying out and designing their custom outdoor living environment that fit the way they want to enjoy their outdoor lifestyle. Once the plans were completed, we met with the homeowners for their approval of the design and they were ecstatic! Seeing their mental image of their dream space translated into design plans made the concept of their own private, all-inclusive backyard resort very real.

The final approved design of this major outdoor living combination space includes a low- maintenance AZEK porch and deck, outdoor kitchen, patio with stone wall and integrated gas fire pit. The versatility of each of these structures and spaces individually is impressive, but when you put them all together, the vast number of options for using this combination space is mind-blowing!! Let’s take a look at each element:

  • Covered porch in NE Columbia outdoor combination projectThe Covered Porch – Also referred to as an “open porch,” it has a roof, which provides protection from the sun, unpredictable summer rainstorms and other elements and still offers the benefit of circulating fresh air. In this area, it can be used for dining, family game night, a cool, quiet area for relaxing or just about anything.
  • The Deck – It not only adds value to the home, but it enhances the way our customers live outdoors, as it can be used as a wide open space for a large group to mingle and socialize or broken up into zones with cozy furnishings to create conversation areas…the options are limited only by the imagination. They can take advantage of all the benefits that the fresh air and sunshine provide, and spend quality time with their friends and family entertaining in style with little fuss.

AZEK deck in NE Columbia outdoor combination project

  • The Outdoor Kitchen – We all know the kitchen is the true “hub” of the home. It’s unclear if it’s the wonderful smells that waft from this area, the easy access to all of the food or the need to be involved in the activity, no matter how much space or comfortable seating you have in the den, everyone seems to gather in the kitchen. The outdoor kitchen has the same draw and it allows the host and head chef to still be involved in the fun of the outdoor events, while preparing the food and drinks.

  • The Patio – Much like the deck, a patio is attractive, weather resistant, and extremely functional as it significantly expands a family’s living and entertaining space with extreme versatility in design. The physical structure of this  patio is exceptionally durable, low-maintenance and easily lends itself to a multitude of uses with its stamped concrete design. A rounded hardscape seating wall helps define the space and serves as a plant shelf or additional seating around the integrated fire pit with gas insert.

  • The Fire Pit – Gather chairs all around it, no matter what the season, and it’s instant social hour with s’mores and hot chocolate or beers and brats. More often than not, fire pits are built into the hardscape area to provide almost year-round enjoyment of the outdoor space, as with this design. The addition of a fire pit makes a strong focal point and generates an abundance of ambiance, light and warmth as well.

Clearly each component can hold its own in the world of outdoor living structures. Now, put them all together and this all-inclusive outdoor living combination space cohesively functions as one space with overwhelming versatility of style and function as well as a multitude of benefits. Add the fact that it’s constructed entirely of low-maintenance materials for many years of immeasurable enjoyment while providing a uniquely stunning addition to their property…and I bet we have blown your mind!

Existing Detached Covered Porch Converted to Indoor Room with Outdoor-Living-Room Feel at Lake Murray

Lakeside pavilion on Lake Murray, SC.

Interior of lakeside pavilion on Lake Murray, SC.

Archadeck of Central South Carolina just completed a terrific project for a homeowner residing on beautiful Lake Murray. We started with only an existing concrete patio, a roof and an outdoor fireplace that offered stunning views of the water, but no protection from insects and changing weather conditions. The family’s goal was to create an inviting space that could be used year round so they could take advantage of entertaining with friends at any time.

It was important to the homeowner that the outdoor feel be maintained with the new design so that hanging out in the space still had the feeling like everyone inside was on vacation and not feeling like they were stuck indoors. They were going after an airy, open resort-type mood so that it felt very much like a getaway.

Before Archadeck of Central SC began the trasformation of this space:

Before Archadeck of Central SC began the transformation of this space.

We were able to work with the existing structure to save the client a bunch of money. We simply added walls, doors and sliding glass windows to create the vibe and feeling of an outdoor room while everything is protected inside so that it safeguards from harsh weather and nasty biting critters. Everyone can enjoy dining, relaxing, and even watching TV from the big screen mounted above the fireplace’s mantel (and hidden behind doors so that it can’t be seen when not in use). The owners wanted the equivalent of a lakeside living room, and that’s what Archadeck of Central South Carolina gave them.

The expanse of low-maintenance vinyl windows does not hide the views of the surrounding trees, landscape and lake. On beautiful days the windows slide open to take advantage of the cool breezes and sounds of outdoor wildlife. Even if the weather gets wet or wild, the family can sit nestled inside while still enjoying the outdoor feeling thanks to all the glass. There is tons of room for seating inside in separate zones all within the same space. Lots of guests can be simultaneously dining, playing board games or relaxing on the couch watching the ball game. It’s also the perfect spot for a big party when celebration time arises.

The entire structure is made of materials that require minimal upkeep so the family can enjoy their time in their new outdoor room instead of maintaining it. It also fits perfectly into the landscape and is in a similar style to the neighboring homes so that it blends beautifully into the area.

Fire features fan the flames of socializing and coziness in your outdoor living space

Archadeck 2013 PhotographyWe are less than a month away from the first day of fall, and with it comes so many wonderful things. As fall approaches we say goodbye to warm summer evenings, sunbathing, water sports and all the endless summer fun. Now is the time to welcome the glory that is autumn, and the addition of a fire feature — such as a fireplace or fire pit — to your outdoor living space is the perfect way to do it.

Not only does a fire feature offer several benefits,  it also helps to bring a nice conclusion to almost any day of every season! Being a leading designer and builder of custom outdoor living spaces in this area, Archadeck of Central SC has helped hundreds of homeowners add outdoor living spaces, including custom fire features, increasing the curb appeal of their homes.

One of the best things about a fireplace or fire pit is that it can be used year round. Your outside parties will be enhanced with marshmallow toasting, hot dog roasting, cocktails, warm cider and s’mores galore! The benefits of capitalizing on the fire element’s appeal are many. An outdoor fire feature with year-round functionality extends South Carolina’s outdoor season, as well as your home’s physical capacity for accommodating social gatherings.

Is a fire pit right for you

Our custom designs encourage quality time outdoors!

When the autumn nights begin to settle in, even though it may be a little chilly, a fire element can warm you right up and give you an excuse to be outside. Whether it’s down time with the family, intimate get-togethers with friends, or a full-blown party, having a fireplace or fire pit adds another dimension to entertaining. Inevitably, it becomes the focal point, and as most who have spent time staring into a blaze will attest, it encourages friendly conversation and warm feelings. Even while relaxing at home in your hot tub or sauna, a fire feature offers a healthy means of de-stressing.

Much like any outdoor living structure or element, a fire feature can be customized to match your tastes and needs. Even with a smaller yard, you can still create an intimate space for gatherings. From the furniture to the actual fire pit itself, there are plenty of ways you can customize your outdoor space and still reap all of these benefits:

  • Entertainment – nothing says gather a group of friends and family together like a fire pit or fireplace, as it’s a great way to extend your party space to the outdoors.
  • Smores over fireCooking – although, not as precise as a grill or bar-b-que, fire pits and outdoor fireplaces can provide a flame over which you can create a multitude of culinary creations.
  • Heat – you can extend your entertaining seasons a bit by staying warm on those chilly evenings practically year round.
  • Ambiance – even if you aren’t into throwing parties or entertaining, the ambiance a fire feature brings is worth the investment alone, especially if you are into star gazing with a loved one while sitting next to one of nature’s most captivating elements.
  • Added home value – an attractive fire feature creates an enthralling focal point that can  help make your home stand apart from others.

As a natural extension of the home’s ground floor, a patio significantly expands a family’s living and entertaining space. It provides a perfect gathering spot for guests and family who will be drawn indoors to this enticing space. Concrete and paver patios are attractive, weather resistant, and extremely functional for your outdoor recreation and entertaining needs. When you install a custom-designed patio in your yard, you will create a beautiful new space that is perfectly suited to your home. Here is a quick look at some of the great benefits of a concrete patio.

Versatility

Archadeck patios and hardscapesA hardscape will provide you with fantastic design versatility as well as functional versatility. No matter the style and landscaping of your yard, you will be able to create a patio that matches your taste with the use of pavers or special stamping and shaping tools that will allow you to make your new concrete patio your very own. The physical structure lends itself to a multitude of uses: wheel in a portable bar and you’ve got a great place for cocktails and mingling; add several seating arrangements and the conversation circles abound; place a large dining table and chairs in the center and you’re ready for dinner party al fresco; or clear the whole space, turn up the tunes and you and your guests can dance the night away!

Durability

Along with being incredibly versatile, patios are also extremely durable. When you install a new hardscape in your yard, you will be creating a highly functional space that can stand up to the demands of daily life and will last for many years to come. Your patio will withstand inclement weather such as snow and rain.

NE Columbia patio and custom fire pitEase of Maintenance

A patio is easy to maintain. Unlike a wooden structure, hardscapes will not become damaged by termites or extreme weather conditions. In addition, your patio will be incredibly easy to clean on a routine basis.

These benefits show just how versatile and valuable a hardscape/patio can be. Now imagine it as part of your combination outdoor living space, as a second layer of functionality and beauty…just as it is in both of these recently completed Archadeck of Central South Carolina projects:

NE Columbia fire pit and patio addition.

Our Northeast Columbia project combined a fire pit and patio with a step down into backyard. The hardscape area of this outdoor living space provides a conversation area surrounding the fire pit and ample space for the homeowner and guests to mingle and socialize while enjoying the warmth and beauty of the fire. Truly a masterful combination of structures and space for these homeowners to enjoy.

At this Lake Murray home, we custom designed and built an outdoor living combination space that included a patio, retaining wall and fire pit along with a screened porch and a deck. To further stretch the enjoyment time, each structure in this outdoor living oasis is constructed with low maintenance materials. The patio is made of stamped concrete, the retaining wall and fire pit use synthetic stone facing, the screened porch is aluminum and the deck is constructed with AZEK composite decking in Hazelwood. As you can see in the pictures above, this stunning design is quite an extensive project and totally transforms this backyard. The patio is vital to the flow of the design and connects the deck to the fire pit. Simply GORGEOUS!

Just as spring’s arrival will completely change the look and feel of your environment, outdoor living spaces often change the entire way you regard your residence. Much like the inside of your home, your outdoor space should have designated areas for the many different things you and your family may do, from hobbies and relaxing to entertaining and recreation. This is best achieved with an outdoor living environment consisting of two or more structures designed together and working as one LARGE structure.

Homeowners with a zest for outdoor living crave spaces with maximum style, function and continuity, and those that combine multiple structures fit the bill! Archadeck of Central South Carolina specializes in delivering this type of backyard bliss with  myriad high quality outdoor living areas we custom design and build throughout Columbia and the surrounding areas. Examples include:

  • Patio and deck combinations that comingle dining and lounging spaces for groups of any size – as your dinner party is winding down, guests can easily descend to the stone patio filled with seating arrangements of comfortable sofas and chairs for coffee and conversation.
